The Veterans Home of California - Fresno is a 300-bed, long term care facility located on 27 acres in heart of the San Joaquin Valley.
Opened in October 2013, the VHC-Fresno has 300 beds and presently offers Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE), also known as assisted living. In preparation for the upcoming election in November, the Fresno County Clerk/Registrar of Voters, James Kus, came to the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, to provide our veterans with information about how Fresno County elections are conducted. Needless to say, our inquiring veterans had quite a few questions for Mr. Kus. It was a very informative and thorough presentation, plus, several of our new residents were able to update their information so they would be able to vote in this important election in November.
One of the driving forces that make the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, such an amazing facility, is due in large part to our Director of Nursing, Martina Cadsap. After a long career of caring for others and ten years here at the Fresno Home, Martina is retiring. We are so grateful for her passion and commitment to ensuring our veterans receive the best of care. Thanks to her tenacity and exceptional leadership, the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, is ranked in the top three percent of nursing homes in the nation.
We will miss her dearly and wish all the best in the next chapter of her life.
Not many things go together as great as chicken and waffles! Our residents enjoyed a special brunch of this delicious duo prepared by our wonderful Activities Team at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno. Needless to say there were many happy faces and happy tummies.
What's better than watching your favorite team on a hot summer night, with an ice cold beer. Well for the resident's at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, not much. They recently gathered together to watch the Los Angeles Dodgers take on the San Francisco Giants. Needless to say, with these veterans, there was a split on who was routing for who.
Residents at the Veterans Home of California-Fresno, celebrated the 4th of July with great music and great food to enjoy. Country Western artist John Pemberton performed a morning concert in the dining room, which was packed with veterans. Following the concert, what would the 4th of July be without hot dogs and corn on the cob. Even though the weather was restrictive, it didn't keep our veterans from enjoying the day.

On this Korean War Memorial Day, we remember the more than 33,700 American military personnel who died fighting in Korea. Some 20,300 others died while serving during the Korean War Era.
The Korean War produced 146 Medal of Honor recipients. The names of 13 of them grace our Medal of Honor Hall at CalVet headquarters in downtown Sacramento. Six of those 13 died in battle, their medals presented posthumously to family members.
For most of the members of the Friends of Kearny Bowls, racing is a new found hobby inspired by the racers who circled Kearny Bowls race track back in the 1960's. Events like this car show help to preserve its history. Many of the residents who now live at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno remember going to the race track across from Chandler Field airport. It was a wonderful time to visit and remember those glory days!

To celebrated Juneteenth, residents at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, were treated to a jazz concert, lead by Dr. Clarence Bush, who also shared the history of Juneteenth with our veterans.

Residents at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, celebrated Father's Day early with a Brews & Bites event. First the ladies from Saint George's Greek Orthodox Church donated pies and gift cards to raffle off to our veterans. Then the Activities Team hosted a festive event that includes pub food with an array of beers and wine to choose from. To top it off, all our guys received a sling bag, or "man purse." The veterans loved them. Happy Father's Day to all our wonderful dads!
Today, June 6, 2024, marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
We honor the heroism and sacrifices of all those who served as part of the 1944 invasion of Normandy, which laid the foundation for Allied victory on the Western Front in World War II.
Memorial Day 2024 was celebrated by residents at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, in an intimate setting honoring those who served our country. In front of the recently unveiled Memorial Project, residents gathered to enjoy a moving performance from Valerie Salcedo and hear an inspirational talk from fellow resident Jon Conriquez.
As residents continued to participate in the Veterans Home of California, Fresno Summer Olympic Games, staff gathered together to root them on in their events. Day one included axe throwing and Jeopardy; day two Bocce Ball and The Price is Right; and day three Archery and Family Feud. The residents competed on both an individual level and on a Unit level. In the end the Skilled Nursing Whitney Building 5 won with 3 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze medals. This was a wonderful engaging series of competitions that brought together our veterans and staff together in the spirit of competition and comradery.
After the opening ceremony for the Veterans Home of California, Fresno Olympics, our veterans participated in the first event. Axe throwing. We had participants from all levels of care participate in this event, which created an exciting event for participants and spectators.
In honor of the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Paris, the Veterans Home of California, Fresno hosted their first ever Olympic Games. The following video is of the opening ceremony parade of athletes. Leading the procession is Fresno veteran, James Kidd, who was an actual relay torch bearer for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games 40 years ago. This was the torch he was given for participating in the relay.
The ladies at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, were treated to a delicious brunch in honor of Mother's Day, which included making flower arrangements as unique as each of our lovely ladies are.
The motorcycle group, the Fresno Freedom Riders participated in the California Legacy Run last weekend. They made the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, one of their stops. During that stop they presented the Home with a check for $500. Thank you Freedom Riders!
The Physics Outreach students from Fresno State came to the Veterans Home of California, Fresno to provide our residents with an interactive demonstration on the "laws of physics." These students are graduating in May, with one goal in mind, to become physics teachers. Their professor, Don Williams, is not only teaching them about the principles of physics, but also how to be an engaging teacher themselves. Their presentation lasted two hours and our veterans were completely captivated and engaged the entire time. It was a wonderful presentation.
The intern from Activities Department who coordinated the entire talent show at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, Matthew Tadros, couldn’t pass up the opportunity to perform his gospel rap song “The Way.” It was way, way cool!

When our resident Tommy Wages sat down to play the piano at our talent show, needless to say, he blew us all away with his performance!
When our intern in the Activities Department at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno, said he wanted to organize a talent show for both veterans and staff, we had no idea what we would get. Boy were we surprised at how talented our folks are!

More than 70 veterans part of 28th Central Valley Honor Flight The Honor Flight will take veterans who served in World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War and the Vietnam War to visit the monuments and memorials in Washington, DC, dedicated to their service and sacrifice.
Don't let that straight face fool you, our WWII veteran Charles Hendrickson was thrilled to be part of this Central Valley Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C. His es**rt, Phillip Teresi, has done this before, so Charles is in good hands. Everyone at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno wish them all the best for a memorable trip.
This morning, WWII veteran and resident of the Veterans Home of California, Charles Hendrickson, received a CHP es**rt to the Fresno airport for his Central Valley Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C.
You could not have asked for a more beautiful day as the residents from the Veterans Home of California, Fresno headed out to Sanger to go fishing. Volunteers from the group Making a Difference Outdoors, treated our veterans to fishing on a private pond, followed by a delicious barbeque lunch. It was a memorable day for our residents and for the volunteers.
After a four year pause due to COVID, the annual Easter celebration at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno took place with family friendly activities for young and old alike. We painted cookies and bunny ears, decorated Easter bags and had our faces painted. We had a huge Easter egg hunt with over 1.000 colorful plastic eggs filled with surprises, that took place throughout the courtyard. The wonderful Assisteens volunteers truly helped make this a memorable event our veterans won't soon forget.
The countdown to Easter has begun at the Veterans Home of California, Fresno. Since the Easter Bunny was unavailable to stuff eggs, his helpers, the Assisteens of Fresno, were on-hand today to help our residents stuff 1000 plastic eggs for Friday's Easter Egg Hunt. Its going to be a hopping good time for young and old alike.
