Day 5
Rejection
Kneeling on a stranger’s carpet, overpriced vacuum hose in hand, I struggled to maintain eye contact. I must have apologized at least half a dozen times—for bothering the poor woman in the first place and for attempting to sell the silly contraption.
For knocking on her door in the first place.
If only she hadn’t answered.
If only I hadn’t answered that vague ad in the newspaper. Become an independent contractor, they said. Earn thousands in commissions, they said.
Why I ever thought I, a woman who hates dirt, dust, and socially awkward situations, could ever succeed as a door-to-door salesperson is beyond me.
Then again, I didn’t. I quit, and began plotting my resignation by the first house.
I wonder if any of Jesus’ disciples felt similar when, in Matthew 10, He sent them out, two by two, to share His truth with complete strangers. Granted, they were selling something much more valuable than vacuums, but still, strangers and religion.
Not only that, but they were to stay with these strangers, as their guests. In their home, presumably for as long as they’d have them. If the strangers were receptive, accepted their message, the disciples were to “let their peace rest on them.” If the homeowners got riled up or kicked the disciples out, they were to shake the dust off their feet. They weren't to allow any trace of that “rejection” to cling to them.
They weren’t to allow “rejections” past or present get in the way of their calling. They needed to let them go. So do we. We’ve all experienced rejection, but we don’t have to stay there. The next time you find yourself in an awkward, sure-to-be-rejected situation, or when someone mistreats or turns their back on you, mentally shake off the dust and move on, knowing you’re deeply loved by your Heavenly Father.
~ Jennifer Slattery
”And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him. These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. Provide neither gold nor silver nor copper in your money belts, nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; for a worker is worthy of his food. “Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out. If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, shake off the dust from your feet.“

PERMISSION TO SHINE

Day 7
Permission To Shine
“I pulled back into the parking lot, navigated the last three cones and into the space as directed. After putting the car in park, I turned off the ignition and waited for what seemed like an eternity. In reality, it was just a few seconds. The officer swished his pen a few more times across the bottom of his clipboard, then with a smile, he said, “Congratulations. Great job. Go inside and give them this paper. The state has now officially given you permission to be on the road.”
Then, he put on his hat and exited the vehicle.
Permission. I now had permission!
Imagine if I did all of the practicing, all of the tests, all of the work to get my license...only to put it in a drawer when I got back home, never to be used again. Imagine having permission but doing nothing with it.
Imagine having the right to do something amazing...and never using it for any real purpose.
Well, you have permission...permission to shine!
Because we belong to the Lord, “we are now people of the light.” So, it’s time to ACT like people of the Light and let our light shine. We have been given permission!
No need to read 127 self-help books to try to figure out your purpose. Your purpose is to SHINE! You have gifts and talents. SHINE! You have passion. SHINE! You have a unique way of looking at the world and telling stories. SHINE!
Be good. Be honest. Be truthful. Please the Lord. Act like people of the light because you have been given PERMISSION TO SHINE!”
”“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.“

Day 6
Taking It For Granted
“It has happened to me many times. I go online and I see someone selling a product or making money from something that I already know how to do. And every time I see it, the thought comes back to my brain, “Now, why didn’t you do that?”
The problem is overthinking. Analysis paralysis. You know what I’m talking about. You’re waiting for a groundbreaking idea to appear in your mind and you overlook what you already know how to do. You take your skills, your light, for granted because they come easily and you don’t feel like anyone is remotely interested in having you teach them how you did it...until...you see someone else doing it.
That’s the thing with light...it just shines! We don’t have to do much to cause it to shine. In fact, it takes more work to put a lampshade over it than it does to allow it to shine. And because we’re built to shine, we figure it couldn’t be that easy.
But, the Bible doesn’t tell us to discover our spark, work hard to kindle it, build it up, blow air on it and add wood chips.
It says we are the light and we are to let it shine. We are already light and we simply need to shine. But because it doesn’t take work to shine, because it feels like shining is too easy, somehow, it feels like we didn’t earn it.
That’s the error. The work isn’t in shining. The work is in equipping ourselves to deal with the bricks others throw...bricks intended to dim or damage the light. We’re going to get hit with the bricks sometimes and if we haven’t done the work, the bricks hurt us and throw us off track. So, the hard work is in navigating the storm. But even in the storm, our light still shines. And we can count on God’s light within us to help navigate the storm.
You don’t have to work for the Light. You already have it. Just let it shine!”
”“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. ”“No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”“

Day 1
The Dark Room
“Imagine a dark room. Inside the room are children. They are there, huddled in one area, hugging each other because the warmth of each other’s bodies is the only comfort they have. The touch of human skin close by is the only sense of familiarity they possess. The room is terrifying because although their eyes have adjusted to the dark, they can’t see a thing. There is no light. Even shadows need a little light.
But then, you enter the room, and you turn on a flashlight. “Kids,” you say, “it seems like the storm and wind have knocked out the electricity for all the homes in the neighborhood.”
The kids run to you because there is light. But they also run to you because you brought the light. They are thankful for light, but they praise you because you brought the light.
Do you understand this? You are the light. You were created and specially gifted to be light. I know, it feels a little funky. Claiming to be the light almost feels like you are claiming to be god-like. But that’s not the truth. You ARE the light. In fact, Jesus used those very words.
“You are the light of the world...a city set on a hill can not be hidden.”
There it is right there!
But, here’s the great part. Jesus also says, “Let your light SHINE before men so they may see your good works and glorify the Father who is in heaven.”
Translation: They will love the light because it’s necessary. But they will praise the One who brought the light because it is providential.
Don’t hide!”
”“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Day 4: The God who Sees you
“Crisis always brings with it a set of challenges. One thing that has become clear in the current global pandemic is our universal human desire to feel seen, heard, and valued within the context of community. Real community, however, can only be achieved through authentic living.
As a business owner, it is easy to hide the most vulnerable parts of ourselves behind the busyness of the demands of our work. If we are not careful, our routines can distract us into thinking that movement of any kind is productive and purposeful. That is not always the case. For example, a successful return on our marketing efforts does not measure the success of our roles as wives, mothers, sisters, or friends.
In order to fully live authentically, God will sometimes allow a pause to our hustle so that a deeper work can begin. This deep work may require confronting guilt for things we have neglected to pursue purpose, or addressing disappointment at sacrifices that did not yield the expected results. Authentic living rests in the fact that we cannot hide any part of ourselves from God, who is Jehovah El-Roi, or “The God who sees me.”
As a Christian businesswoman, God sees all of you—the parts that are highlighted on social media, the parts that customers see, the parts that are anxious about the future, and the parts only your spouse and children see. This means whatever it is that worries you, angers you or disappoints you is not a surprise to Him. Right where you are, He wants to take the truth of your whole identity and weave it into one glorious testimony that extends even beyond the reach of your business.
Reflection Question:
1. Are there any areas of my life where I feel forgotten by God? How does knowing He sees me change those feelings? “
”Now the Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. And He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.” The Angel of the Lord said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hand.” Then the Angel of the Lord said to her, “I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for multitude.” And the Angel of the Lord said to her: “Behold, you are with child, And you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, Because the Lord has heard your affliction. He shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against every man, And every man’s hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.” Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, “Have I also here seen Him who sees me?”“

Day #1: Restored for Great Works
“You can’t have a testimony without a test. You have probably heard that saying, or some variation of it, a thousand times. Most of us don't think about what it really means until we find ourselves in the middle of a test. The fact is that difficulties are an inescapable part of every believer's life, especially the purpose-driven believer.
In the bible, we see Abraham and Sarah navigating infertility for decades after a promise of a long lineage was given to them; we see Joseph’s purpose revealed then followed by years of obstacles; we see Job suffer tremendous loss, not as a punishment, but because he was called and favored by God; we see David ordained to be King, then running for his life. If I challenge you to think about someone in the bible who lived a life of purpose and did not have to go through a test, you won’t find even one. The common theme in all their lives is that their glory periods were preceded by intense testing periods.
That is bad news and good news. The bad news is that, likewise, the test that comes with our God-given purpose will be uncomfortable, difficult, and in many ways, inevitable. If Christ Himself was not spared (Romans 8:32), how much more you and me?
The good news is that we are in good company. If God has positioned you to endure a test, then He is developing virtues like faithfulness, self-control, gentleness, and patience that testing will produce to help you be a good steward over the good work He has in store. Like those before us, the story will not end with the test, but with a testimony.
Reflection Questions:
1. What is God currently trying to teach me through my circumstances?
2. What was the last testimony that I shared that helped restore hope in someone else? Was it a flowery tale of a great time in my life, or was it about a time that God stepped in to help me overcome challenges in my life and in my work? “
