Dermatosis papulosa nigra (aka “DPN’s”) are benign skin bumps, commonly found on the face and neck. They appear in young adulthood and often become more plentiful over time. They are harmless and do not warrant treatment. Removal is elective and one method is electrocautery, as depicted in this video. We used a low setting to reduce the risk of pigment changes at the site. The lesions are melted with the hyfrecator and will fall off over the next few days. Patients are advised to practice consistent use of sunscreen post treatment. It is a simple and low pain procedure. Here we used topical numbing cream prior to lidocaine injections to maximize our patient’s comfort. If you have new or changing bumps on your skin, it’s always best to have them evaluated.
