We have a very special Mother’s Day celebration for one of our sweet mommas. She could have easily been spending Mother’s Day with empty arms, just as so many mothers are. But instead, she is snuggling her son, nursing him, and having a deep appreciation for the gift of his life. On the day he was born, things quickly became complicated. Midwife Amber arrived to him already in distress, heart rate down, having flipped breech just moments ago & compressing his umbilical cord. Midwife Teri followed just minutes behind, kicking off her sandals to run up a few flights of stairs more quickly. 911 was called & we worked as quickly as possible to get him born. His mother was a WARRIOR! Minutes felt like hours, but we finally got him out - mom, dad, doula, and 2 midwives working together while the poor 911 operator shouted through the phone “can anyone hear me? I have advice for you” 😆 (We got this, sis 💪 but thanks.) CPR with chest compressions were immediately started by Amber & Teri followed swiftly by EMS arrival, who intubated him on the bedroom floor and transported him to the NICU. Thanks to the swift action of this team, EMS, and the NICU staff, he is now 2 months old and thriving. Exclusively breastfeeding, going on family walks, and surely being held particularly tight this Mother’s Day. #mothersday @midwifelife19 doula @shellbfit

2 Words: UNDERWATER CAMERA! @fat_baby_photography made this incredible birth film, which includes the moment of birth as filmed on a camera placed on the floor of the birth pool (and my maneuvers dislodging the baby’s shoulder). Also, this birth is a beautiful example of a large birth team. We are often asked how many people are “allowed” to attend a birth. Ok first of all - it’s your house. We can’t “allow” anything - you make the rules. We will certainly have conversations to help you judiciously built your team, but ultimately the choice is yours. Birth is not a spectator sport. Each and every person on this birth team had a specific job - food, birth pool set up, dad’s support, big sister’s support, and so on. Every person was completely focused on supporting this family. It was so beautiful to see. A rare experience that I am so blessed to have been a part of! Thank you to my friend & colleague @cewatsoncnm for joining me to assist! Such a joy to work beside you! 🤍🤍🤍
As National Midwifery week comes to a close, we wanted to take a minute to celebrate and re-introduce our Nurse-Midwives! Midwife Teri is the founder of BundleBorn Midwifery & has attended well over a thousand natural births, with nearly 500 of those out of the hospital. She is an advocate not only for parents, but also babies. She believes that babies’ experiences while being born & as newborns are critical for the babies’ life-long development.
