[FALL 2024 CLASS HIGHLIGHT] Interior Design 101: Planning & Inspiration (AAC), Grades 7-10, Mondays, 3rd Period

Students will go through the Design Process as they undertake residential design projects that go beyond sheer decorating. Learn from a professional interior designer on how to create your dream rooms! The sky’s the limit when it comes to color choices, fabrics, furniture and accessories, and how they are brought together. You will learn step-by-step the basics of space planning, color concepts, and selection of the right elements such as furnishing, lighting, flooring and surfaces to create functional and aesthetically appealing spaces.

In the fall, we will explore design elements, inspiration and planning, textiles, accessories, lighting, color schemes, and more.

[FALL 2024 CLASS HIGHLIGHT] Achieving Clarity in Nonfiction Writing (AAC), Grades 7-9, Wednesdays, 1st Period

This is a dynamic course in which students will be equipped with the fundamental skills needed to become clear and compelling writers. Through hands-on writing exercises, extended pieces of writing, writer’s workshops, and more, students will gain an appreciation for the importance of becoming a clear writer and thinker, and learn practical strategies to produce clear writing.

[FALL 2024 CLASS HIGHLIGHT] Pre-Algebra, Grades 7-8, Mondays & Wednesdays, 1st Period (twice/week)

This course will give students a foundation in some of the most essential Pre-Algebra skills to prepare for Algebra I and beyond. Students will work with integers, simplify expressions using the Order of Operations, work with the Distributive Property, solve one, two, and multi-step equations and inequalities. New topics will be introduced each week and students will have homework assignments to help them practice concepts taught in class.

[FALL 2024 CLASS HIGHLIGHT] Natural History of Orange County: It's a Small World! Grades 5-8, Wednesdays, 3rd Period

Once a shallow ocean that receded to a land of giant ground sloths and saber-toothed cats, the land we call Orange County is one of very few places in the world that is considered a biodiversity hotspot; a small area that has an enormous variety of plants and animal species! The variety of plants and animals that call Orange County home are so well adapted to the habitats of our area some are found nowhere else in the world!

Natural History of Orange County is a class that highlights these amazing species and will give students that are curious about Orange County wildlife a place to explore and investigate in a guided, hands-on class.

[FALL 2024 CLASS HIGHLIGHT] Graphic Novel Analysis & Creation: Fantasy Fiction
Grades 4-5: Thursdays, 2nd Period // Grades 6-8: Tuesdays, 2nd Period

This class will introduce students to the art of writing and creating graphic novels! We will cover a brief history of comics and their influences, learn to identify elements of graphic novels, and practice building fictional narratives that students will turn into their own graphic novels. Through discussion and practice, students will learn to think critically about narrative structure, settings, characters, representation, and sequential storytelling.

[FALL 2024 CLASS HIGHLIGHT] Road Trip USA! From Delaware to Arkansas, Grades 3-5, Mondays, 3rd Period

The United States is crisscrossed with more than 4 million miles of highway – enough for 8 round-trip road trips to the moon! All those roads lead to some cool state history, wacky sights, and unique places for each of those states. In the fall, we’ll start our adventure with the 1st state in our nation, Delaware, and go through a nationwide adventure– in order of statehood– until we get to Arkansas. Come on this fun road trip through our country and see how each state shaped our United States of America.

[FALL 2024 CLASS HIGHLIGHT] Crochet Basics: Cozy & Comfy, Grades 4-8, Tuesdays 2nd Period (New Section Added!)

Did you know? Numerous studies have shown that crocheting has a positive effect on concentration, mental health, memory, and left-right brain connection. Come join us this fall where we'll learn to crochet basic stitches to make 2D projects: friendship bracelet, coaster, bookmark, and the pumpkin! Students will have the opportunity to pick their own projects to craft and sell at Arbor’s Market Day in November 2024 (registration for Market Day is separate from class registration and not required). These handmade treasures also make great gifts for friends and family!

[FALL 2024 CLASS HIGHLIGHT] Intermediate Ceramics
Grades 7-10: Mondays, 2nd Period // Grades 3-6: Mondays, 3rd Period

Move beyond simple cylinders and pinch pots to create complex forms and intricate surface decoration! Explore new methods and expand your skills with artist and teacher, Karren Hiskey, as she guides students to a greater level of confidence and competence in this new class of Intermediate Ceramics. Projects range from a stamped pattern mug with pressed slab construction to an extruded coil Tree of Life sculpture along with plaster mold making students will use to create a relief tile mural and other projects.

Student must have previously taken Ceramics at The Arbor or must have acquired the fundamental skills and techniques, such as knowledge of the stages of clay: greenware, bisque, glazed and basic technical skills: pinch, coil, slab and score & slip. Projects are designed to advance technical skills and aesthetic growth.

[FALL 2024 CLASS HIGHLIGHT] Mixing It Up with Acrylic Painting
Grades 3-5, Mondays 2nd Period // Grades 6-8, Mondays 1st Period

Mix it up with some acrylic paint! Students will develop their knowledge and skills in acrylic painting. Students will gain confidence in their ability to paint and will have the opportunity to learn technical skills through painting a variety of subject matters. Enjoy the art of panting in this fun and encouraging environment!

[FALL 2024 CLASS HIGHLIGHT] The Science of Art, Grades 6-8, Thursdays, 3rd Period

Explore the science of art! The creation of art often uses science for materials, techniques, and inspiration. You cannot paint without chemical pigments, draw with perspective without geometry, or understand color theory without understanding how light is perceived by the eye. Not only will we create art using concepts from science, but we will look at the science that goes into the construction of visual art and music.

What an amazing 23-24 year we had here at The Arbor! It was loaded with lots of fun times engaging critically, creatively, and collaboratively in deep content, and we wouldn't have had it any other way. A huge round of applause to our teachers, students, families, and community for an amazing year!

[FALL 2024 NEW SECTION ADDED!] We just added another section of our US History: From the First People to the Revolutionary War, Grades 4-6 on Thursdays, 1st period to our fall schedule!

In this exciting and hands-on class, students will design, build, and create their way through U.S. history! We will explore North America to see where the first societies formed, how they changed after the arrival of Europeans, and how it all influences our lives today. Classes will include games, crafts, model building, and experiments! Join the adventure as we experience history in a fun and engaging way.

[FALL 2024 CLASS HIGHLIGHT] Great Plays as Literature: Antigone, Grades 6-8, Wednesdays, 3rd Period (12:30pm)

Step into the ancient world of Thebes, where individual convictions and familial loyalty clash with the power of the state, and moral dilemmas unfold in the face of absolute authority. Through analyzing Antigone as literature, students will unravel the layers of this timeless tragedy!

This class is great for students who are excited to think critically about some of literature’s most fascinating characters, analyze masterful use of language through thoughtful writing and lively discussion, and make connections to the real world.

[🌳ARBOR GIVING TREE CAMPAIGN🌳] Please join us this April in our first Arbor Giving Tree Campaign. Now through Arbor Day, Friday April 26, 2024, our hope is that we can rally as a community to fill our ‘Giving Tree’ with representation of support from our amazing community. The Arbor Learning Community is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is powered by the very community we serve. As such, our community’s participation is most essential to The Arbor’s existence and operations.

Please consider taking part in this campaign to contribute financially to The Arbor and the giving tree that it is to our students, families, teachers, staff and the larger community. Every contribution is valuable, and no donation is too small to participate in this meaningful campaign.

As a representation of community, donations of $5 or more will be given a leaf to personalize and add to our Arbor Giving Tree. Our Arbor Giving Tree will be displayed from April 8th through Arbor Day, April 26th by the sign-in table and at our Open House on Thursday, April 25th, 5-8pm.
