The Baird Center is already 64 years old in this photo. Most of the information we have about the Baird Center can be found in the Matheson History Museum, a local museum specializing in the histories of Alachua County and Florida. The museum is right by the downtown library if you want to check it out!
South Main Station decided to give this wall a refresh and asked local artist to help us out. Thanks so much for doing a great job!

Meet Hoch Sh*tama. He founded Akira Wood 45 years ago with the objective of creating beauty in the world through fine woodworking, inspired by both the Japanese and European traditions. In 1981, he purchased the former Baird Hardware Warehouse property for his growing woodworking business. Forty-five years later, Akira is known in the architectural woodworking market for its artisan quality and attention to detail. It has created beautiful interiors in cities across the continent with world-renowned architects like Zaha Hadid and Bjarke Ingels.
Starting with Heartwood Soundstage in 2017, Hoch and his family have focused on bringing this commitment of skilled creation and honored history to our own community by reimagining this historic property. South Main Station is the manifestation of a vision to carry the legacy of Akira’s work and its historic space into the next generation.
Come celebrate Akira’s 45th year, Heartwood, our community, and the holidays this Friday at 6:30 PM with a free concert on the Heartwood lawn. Music by the Front Porch Backsteppers, Uncle Mosie, and the Shambles.

Pictured: Betty Alsobrook, the daughter of C. Addison Pound, celebrating her birthday with friends . C. Addison Pound was president of the Baird Hardware Company beginning in 1930. He was hired as a teenager in 1908 by the founder, Eberle Baird, and made $5/week as a salesman before eventually working his way to the top of the company. Before Akira Wood purchased our property, Baird Hardware was a crucial part of Gainesville’s commercial prosperity, and Addison Pound contributed greatly to the development of the city. His legacy lives on in our commitment to honoring history and building community. We are thrilled to have helped celebrate Betty’s birthday where her father once built his legacy.
