Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month – July 2022
It is not just older people who are affected by arthritis, children get it too — that’s why observing Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month in July each year is so important. Founded by the Arthritis Foundation, this campaign aims to raise awareness about this condition and share resources to help those affected by it. Did you know, with kids, arthritis affects not just joints, but other organs too? Today is DNA Day.
April 25 was chosen as the day to acknowledge the contribution of genetics because on this day in 1953, scientists James Watson, Francis Crick, and their colleagues published the double helix structure of DNA in the journal, Nature.
Did You Know…
…that each human cell contains approximately 6.5 feet (2 meters) of DNA?
While DNA Day was first commemorated in the United States in 2003, it is now celebrated around the world. In the US, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) is at the helm of organizing celebrations for the day. Universities and scientific organizations around the world also celebrate DNA day by organizing scientific conferences, educational outreach, online discussions and essay competitions.
The holiday is also called International DNA Day and World DNA Day.
Happy Birthday Robert B. Thomas, founder if The Old Farmer's Almanac.
The founder of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, Robert B. Thomas, was born on April 24, 1766. He founded The Old Farmer’s Almanac in 1792, when George Washington was president.
Thomas remained the editor until his death at age 80 in 1846, supposedly while reading proofs for the 1847 edition. By then, his was the oldest almanac in the country.
This fact inspired Thomas’s successor, John H. Jenks, to add the word “Old” to the title, forever distinguishing this publication from common forms of the genre.
Today, The Old Farmer’s Almanac stands as the oldest continuously published periodical in North America.
April 22 is Jelly Bean Day.
It is an unofficial holiday that honors the sugary bean-shaped candies that are hard on the outside and gel-like on the inside.
Some sources suggest that jelly beans were popularized during the American Civil War when people were encouraged to send the candy to soldiers in the field.
Jelly beans are equally loved by children and adults alike. President Ronald Reagan was known to be a big fan of this delicious chewy candy, so much so that about 3 tons of red, white, and blue jelly beans were used during his inauguration as the 40th President of the United States in 1981. It is said that his favorite flavor was licorice.
According to Jelly Belly, a popular jelly bean manufacturer, the most popular jelly bean flavors include cherry and buttered popcorn.
Food historians believe that Turkish delights or lokum, a chewy candy from Turkey, inspired the creation of the jelly beans, though it is unclear who invented them.
How to Celebrate?
Have jelly beans with all your meals.
What about trying bacon flavored jelly beans for breakfast?
Been told that you don’t eat enough fruits? Eat a handful of fruit-flavored jellybeans.
Make art using colorful jellybeans.

Prepare for the Full Pink Moon—and the Paschal Full Moon!
Venture outside on the night of Saturday, April 16, to catch a glimpse of April’s full Pink Moon. This full Moon reaches peak illumination at 2:57 P.M. EDT, but won’t be visible above the horizon until after sunset.
For the best view of this lovely spring Moon, find an open area and watch as the Moon rises just above the horizon, at which point it will appear its biggest and take on a golden hue! Find local Moon rise and set times here:
https://www.almanac.com/astronomy/moon-rise-and-set
Although we wish this name had to do with the color of the Moon, the reality is not quite as mystical or awe-inspiring. In truth, April’s full Moon often corresponded with the early springtime blooms of a certain wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata—commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox—which also went by the name “moss pink.”

International Moment of Laughter Day
On April 14, stop, smell the roses, and laugh a little (or a lot), because it is International Moment of Laughter Day. The unofficial holiday, created by humorologist Izzy Gesell, encourages people to forget the stresses of daily life and give into the healing and relaxing power of laughter.
Medical studies have shown that laughing reduces stress, increases blood flow, and lowers blood sugar levels. Some studies have found that people who laugh just before going to bed are much more likely to sleep better than those who did not.
In addition to its health benefits, laughter also has social advantages. People who are jovial tend to be quickly accepted in social groups and have an easier time making friends. Laughter is a way to spread joy and happiness and bring cheer in the lives of other people.
Scrabble Day
April 13 is Scrabble Day, a day to celebrate the popular board game created in 1938 by Alfred Mosher Butts, an American architect.
Scrabble is a word game where 2 to 4 players place tiles, each having a single letter, on a board such that the tiles form words. Like a crossword puzzle, the words have to be built on a 225 square Scrabble board from top to bottom or from left to right.
First marketed in the United States as Lixiko and Criss-Crosswords, the game is now so popular that it is sold around the word in 29 different languages!
The word Scrabble comes from the Dutch word, schrabbelen, meaning to struggle and scramble.
How to Celebrate?
Gather around with your family and friends and play Scrabble.
Throw a Scrabble themed party. Play a game of Scrabble or two. Whoever wins takes home a thesaurus or a dictionary.
Like baking? Whip up a batch of Scrabble tile cookies to serve at your Scrabble party.
Have some extra Scrabble tiles lying around? Use them to make some Scrabble jewelry for the Scrabble lovers in your life.
Don't have time to play a real game of Scrabble? Download one of the many Scrabble word game apps out there and play while you are out and about.
Just remember not to play when driving or operating heavy and dangerous machinery or when in a meeting.
Autoimmune Diseases
A healthy immune system defends the body against disease and infection. But if the immune system malfunctions, it mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissues, and organs. Called autoimmune disease, these attacks can affect any part of the body, weakening bodily function and even turning life-threatening.
Scientists know about more than 80 autoimmune diseases. Some are well known, such as type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis, while others are rare and difficult to diagnose. With unusual autoimmune diseases, patients may suffer years before getting a proper diagnosis. Most of these diseases have no cure. Some require lifelong treatment to ease symptoms.

A tongue depressor (sometimes called spatula) is a tool used in medical practice to depress the tongue to allow for examination of the mouth and throat. The most common modern tongue depressors are flat, thin, wooden blades, smoothed and rounded at both ends, but, historically, tongue depressors have been made of a variety of materials. Since they are inexpensive and difficult to clean because of their porous texture, wooden tongue depressors are labeled for disposal after a single usage.
Hobbyists and teachers have found a multitude of uses for tongue depressors (sometimes called "craft sticks", "popsicle sticks", or "icy pole sticks") in their projects.
Earlier versions of depressors were made from balsa, pine, or redwood woods. Tongue depressors made from wood and metal exist from the American Civil War.
April 12 is Grilled Cheese Day, a day to celebrate this hearty bread and cheese dish and to make every meal out of it.
Enjoyed today by people around the world as an after school or as a comfort meal, the modern version of a grilled cheese is believed to have originated in the United States during the 1920s when sliced bread and cheese became easily available.
The cheese usually used in grilled cheese is American cheese which is a processed cheese product that has a very low melting point. Hot tomato soup, potato chips, and pickles are common accompaniments of a grilled cheese sandwich.
The British version of a grilled cheese is called a cheese toastie. The cheese of choice for a toastie is cheddar cheese.
How to Celebrate?
Make grilled cheese for all your meals. Have an egg and bacon grilled cheese for breakfast, a tomato and mozzarella grilled cheese for lunch, and a traditional grilled cheese for dinner.
Who says grilled cheese has to be savory? Make a dessert grilled cheese with fruit and brie or cream cheese and chocolate spread.
Gourmet up your grilled cheese by adding gourmet ingredients to it. What about adding some bacon into the mix or some arugula and roasted beets for the vegetarians? Substitute tomato soup with sweet potato soup or pumpkin soup.
Urinary incontinence (UI), also known as involuntary urination, is any uncontrolled leakage of urine. It is a common and distressing problem, which may have a large impact on quality of life. It has been identified as an important issue in geriatric health care. The term enuresis is often used to refer to urinary incontinence primarily in children, such as nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting).
Pelvic surgery, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause are major risk factors. Urinary incontinence is often a result of an underlying medical condition but is under-reported to medical practitioners. There are four main types of incontinence:
Urge incontinence due to an overactive bladder
Stress incontinence due "a poorly functioning urethral sphincter muscle (intrinsic sphincter deficiency) or to hypermobility of the bladder neck or urethra"
Overflow incontinence due to either poor bladder contraction or blockage of the urethra
Mixed incontinence involve features of different other types. Treatments include pelvic floor muscle training, bladder training, surgery, and electrical stimulation.
Behavioral therapy generally works better than medication for stress and urge incontinence. The benefit of medications is small and long term safety is unclear. Urinary incontinence is more common in older women.
Incontinence supplies come in the form of bladder pads, disposable pull-up underwear, children diapers, adult briefs, condom catheters, leg bags, bed bags, and flat pads (or chux) for the bed. Each of these items come in varying thicknesses and work for the bowel.
Siblings Day
The day aims to celebrate the very important but often under-appreciated special relationship and bond of love, friendship, and respect shared between siblings.
Here are some ways you can celebrate this special day:
Even though it is a predominantly American holiday, nothing should stop you from celebrating it wherever you are. Do something special to celebrate your siblings - throw a party for them, cook them their favorite dish, take them out to do their favorite activity, stay at home and go through old family photos and videos, and reminisce about the good times you had growing up together.
Spend some time with your siblings. If you live away from them, call them and talk to them. What about paying them a surprise visit?
If you are unable to call or visit them, what about sending them a lovely card that tells them how much you miss them and care for them?
Tell them how much you love them and appreciate them and all they do for you.
If your siblings are no longer with you, what about doing something special in their memory? Perhaps donating to their favorite charity?
And don't forget your step- and half-siblings! So what if you only share one parent or don't have a genetic connection to them - sometimes connections of the heart are all you need to become brothers and sisters.
Did You Know.....that siblings who have the same parents share 50% of their DNA, while half-siblings – siblings who have one common parent – possess about 25% similar genetic material?
