Benton is a six-year-old Shih Tzu mix who had a terribly sad life before he was rescued. He previously lived with 25 other dogs and the conditions in the home were deplorable. Benton had probably never been groomed in his entire life and he had baseball-sized mats of filth hanging from his body when he came to us. His bath and haircut must have felt so good to him. Benton is quiet and withdrawn but we are seeing tiny glimpses of his personality start to peek through. He has never tried to bite but he is hand-shy and does not approach people for attention. He will accept being held and petted and we think he’s even beginning to like it, though he isn’t brave enough to ask for human affection yet. If you pick him up and place him on the sofa he enjoys being near you. Benton will need a calm and patient person to continue letting him gain confidence at his own pace. Having at least one other dog around would help feel more secure as he acclimates to his new household. Given the chance, Benton is going to blossom and it will be so rewarding to see him thrive.

Benton is fully vetted -- neutered, microchipped, heartworm negative, and current on vaccinations and deworming. You can apply to adopt him by submitting an application at www.sohfga.com.
