Born in 1988, Alex Hanson is an interdisciplinary artist from the Midwest who currently resides in California. He received his MFA from the University of Iowa and BFA at the University of Minnesota - Duluth. He teaches at Sonoma State University and has held various academic positions in universities in Arkansas, Iowa, and Ohio.

Alex’s work often is in the form of installation or built environments, using a variety of materials and objects to “create instances where the viewer is invited to enter into a constructed fiction.” During his residency at Santa Fe College Art Gallery, Alex will create a one-of-a-kind experience which will undoubtedly inspire its audience and elicit new ideas of how we define our relationships with objects and with the space we occupy.

Alex has exhibited nationally and internationally and has been awarded fellowships at multiple Artist-in-Residence programs, some of which are: Vermont Studio Center, I-Park, the Hambidge Center, Yaddo, the Wassaic Project and Wormfarm Institute.

We are thrilled to host Alex as our Artist-In-Residence this year and invite you to come experience his work.

This unique group exhibition features the unique works of Santa Fe College's Visual Art Faculty with mediums ranging from Painting and Drawing, Ceramics, Photography, Installation and Digital Media.

The opening reception will take place on Friday, November 17th, 7:00pm - 9:00pm.

The show will run 11/17/23-01/12/24.

Visual Art Faculty Opening Reception Tomorrow!

The Santa Fe College Art Gallery is proud to present the distinct works of Melrose, FL based artist Chris Teasley. Teasley, originally from Kansas City, MO, creates non-objective works through a unique process combining traditional painting techniques with air blown pigments. Of his current body of work, Teasley says, "I've attempted to circle back to the realm of traditional painting: oil on stretched canvas, glazing techniques and visible brushwork. Still using variations of my air technique, I've set myself to the task of “painting out the trick”, so to speak. In past works, the air-blown images were the primary focus of the paintings, typically supported by solid color fields as constructs to display the images. My current work reflects further refinement of technique in an effort to both inform the basic composition and provide a monochromatic underpainting. This allows me (forces me) to make many more painterly decisions regarding color, tone, and texture, and in some cases, to directly quote the historic while preserving non-objectivity."

A huge thank you to Norman Jensen for his amazing gallery talk this week! We all got so much out of hearing Norman discuss his practice with our students. Norman will be speaking one more time on Tuesday, the 7th, at 10:00 am in the gallery. If you haven't seen this incredible exhibit yet, it's up through the 10th. Don't miss it!

Our Annual Visual Art Faculty Exhibit will be taking place in person for the first time since 2019! Our incredible faculty will be displaying work from their personal practices ranging from painting, drawing, video, installation, photography, ceramics and more.
