When it comes to curved architectural lighting, the terms “endless possibilities” and “limitless possibilities” seem to us a bit hyperbolic. Especially when they are describing what a designer is able to accomplish using a manufacturer’s finite family of radii. Using those few standard curvatures to make “almost any shape imaginable” seems a bit of a stretch.

It is certainly far easier for a manufacturer to just make seven or eight standard radius pieces and have the design community work within those parameters…it certainly would be easier for us to do the same. But we don’t. Because every VoksLyte project is completely custom. Maybe your design requires 19 different radii…no problem, 119 different radii…no problem. Special end treatments and intersections…we do it all the time. We have no standard shapes because we believe there really are no standard projects. Is it more difficult for us? Absolutely, but we like the challenge, and our customers seem to love the results.

We think architectural interiors should be built as the designers see fit, and the lighting should be manufactured to fit the architecture, not the other way around.

CDA Architects of El Paso designed these sculptural forms for a recently-completed renovation at the El Paso International Airport. Two identical custom ceiling pendants with our signature seamless curved intersections (circled in red on the drawing below) highlight this expansive corridor. Painted in hi-gloss powder-coat white and illuminated within using 90+ CRI 4000ºK diodes, this installation not only provides a stunning visual, but also functional illumination at 414 lumens per foot (delivered) at 74 lumens per watt on the floor below.

Here’s a beautiful looking project with some non-standard shapes and wall-to-ceiling transitions. Installed within a custom millwork slot, this Tangent™ Down luminaire starts from the floor, travels upwards and uninterruptedly transitions to the horizontal ceiling, forming a curved corner shape, then travels back down the same wall. Another of the many benefits to designing with VoksLyte…we specialize almost exclusively in custom geometries. Try completing a project like this using another manufacturer’s small family of curves and straight segments!

Our gloss white, 3500ºK luminaire seamlessly frames this amazing linear accelerator, which produces an astonishingly accurate radiation beam, treating cancerous tumors and sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

Here's a piece of the final installation of our very curvy, free-form shape for a private customer. This beautiful undulating Tangent™ Down luminaire is lit internally with 90+ CRI 3500ºK diodes, and powder-coated in gloss black. Not only are VoksLyte Tangent™ custom luminaires beautiful, decorative and customizable to any shape imaginable, but they are also highly functional. This luminaire produces 610 delivered lumens per foot to the surfaces and floor below.

What does it mean to be a custom manufacturer of curved architectural lighting? We at VoksLyte believe it means that “if you can draw it, we can probably manufacture it”. Not only can Tangent ™ be made in any shape imaginable, but we gladly customize to an even greater degree to meet project requirements for mounting, aesthetics and architectural compatibilities.

Is VoksLyte just another linear fixture manufacturer? Absolutely not! While our Tangent profiles are for the most part standardized, there is nothing standard about what we are able to shape them into. We do not have limited families of curvatures or standard angles from which to choose, we build the lighting to exactly fit the designer’s imagination and/or the architectural requirements.

This unusual and complicated Tangent Down pendant fixture will hang in a large private commercial venue. It is 142 feet in overall length and is comprised of three large compound radiused sinusoidal segments. You might ask how many different unique radii are incorporated into this organic flowing curvature? There are 83.

More often than not, the architectural details dictate that the lighting conform to the design rather than the design conforming to the lighting.

This elegant application punctuates VoksLyte’s ability to provide almost any radius imaginable.
These curved Tangent Down (recessed exposed fl**ge) luminaires were manufactured in
three separate non-standard radii, reflecting the curvatures of the continuous desktops below. They provide outstanding illumination using 3000ºK 90+ CRI Luminus LEDs @ 453 lumens per foot.

Radius of 14’ 11 3/8” - 10,645 delivered lumens
Radius of 22’ 5 3/8” - 16,036 delivered lumens
Radius of 29’ 11 3/8” - 17,780 delivered lumens

Please note that VoksLyte’s luminaires are the predominant light source in this room, and consistent with the requirements of a media lecture hall, they are dimmable to 1%.

This beautiful Dallas project was created locally by Interprise Design, and features VoksLyte's Tangent Down (recess mounted with an external fl**ge) with 3500ºK high 90+ CRI LEDs. The luminous channel is custom-curved in the ceiling and the vertical wall and produces 395 delivered lumens per foot. The ceiling to vertical wall corner is monolithic in construction, because we believe that joining luminaire segments in the field at the corners is less than ideal. Especially in a recessed application...too much room for error for the installing contractor if the built dimensions of the space happen to vary. Attached photos and graphic show the finished installation, the corner segment (in the factory, orientated upside down) and an isometric view of how the custom-made segments are assembled. As always, attention to details, to fit and finish make an enormous difference...and it is what we do best.

VoksLyte is the manufacturer of choice for special architectural curvatures. These beautiful Tangent Down™ compound radii, semi-ellipsoidal and wing-shaped (take note of our tight 4-inch inner radius on these) hanging pendant fixtures are days from shipping from our Gaithersburg, MD factory. And, they're just too cool not to share. These organic forms are painted in hi-gloss black powdercoat and illuminated internally with high CRI (90+) Luminus LEDs. Fixtures are shown without the lenses installed, and as they will be hanging in atriums at various elevations and angles, we've shown what they will look like installed on the three key-plans.

VoksLyte's new product line, Tangent™ Shapes has been selected for Architectural SSL magazine's Product Innovation Awards. A family of standardized, uniquely geometrical forms for your next project. Available in all the different variations of our custom Tangent™ product line: direct pendant, direct indirect pendant, recessed exposed fl**ge and recessed mud fl**ge.

Not only can VoksLyte Tangent™ be manufactured in almost any shape imaginable...we also do a beautiful job with seamlessly -illuminated custom intersections. These RGBW fixtures are some of the segments that will join in the field, becoming elaborate intersecting curvilinear forms. We furnished custom LED boards for this project as the design required 2700ºK diodes (instead of the industry-standard 3000ºK diodes) for the white component of the RGBW system. Under wattage density constraints? Custom wattages are also available, just contact the factory. A gloss black powder-coat finish completes the desired aesthetic for both the fixtures and the remote DMX control cabinets.

Sometimes simple, subtle geometry can make the boldest statement. This custom Tangent Down™ pendant fixture, composed of two identical, mirrored "C" shapes hangs in Equinox's New York headquarters. Warm white 3000ºK diodes illuminate these elegant matte-black powder-coated shapes. Imagined by the creative minds at Brooklyn's Lighting Workshop, and realized by VoksLyte.

This beautiful project from the creative minds at Johnson Favaro and Darkhorse Lightworks resides at the Norma Hertzog Community center in Costa Mesa, CA. Although custom VoksLyte Tangent fixtures are in several locations throughout, we thought this room was particularly striking. Tangent UpDown, illuminated with 3000K warm white LEDs, in circular and semicircular configurations (the uplight and downlight elements are independently dimmable). As with all VoksLyte fixtures, we custom build the shapes exactly to your requirements. Creative architectural design needn't be constrained by standardized shapes and curvatures.

Arup and Gensler collaborated on this design, grouping custom radiused Tangent™ UpDown arcs into a randomized circular design. The photo shows a quadrant of this large circular installation.

Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital in Cherry Hill, NJ (completed prior to the pandemic) is a wonderful example of VoksLyte's ability to completely customize our Tangent luminaires. CallisonRTKL's concept was to have a continuous recessed line of functional illumination for this 11-story stairwell. Tangent Down (mud fl**ge) fixtures were factory bent to provide a continuous uninterrupted line of light that transitioned from curved and straight runs in plan, to curved and straight runs in elevation. We think the results are striking. This almost Escher-like installation is visible from the exterior of the building. We often get asked "can you provide Tangent™ bent in elevation?". The answer is yes! And we can make almost any curvature (from very tight radii, to sweeping and compound arcs), and...curvatures that transition from being bent in elevation to bent in plan, all seamlessly. This is a small portion of a project at UC San Diego. Tangent Down™ has been recessed into an architectural niche to replicate semi-regressed mounting. RGBW LED's provide over 16 million color options, although we are told that the occupants of the space have settled on eight favorite colors for different times of the day. Design: CallisonRTKL

A bit of a peek behind the VoksLyte manufacturing curtain. Tangent Down luminaire segments in various stages of completion. Lots of compound and irregular radii, and custom mitred ends on this one. This RGBW project when fully assembled, will resemble the venation pattern in a leaf, and will provide 16 million different color combinations and a broad pallete of white hues.
