Monday Morning Review by Teri
Do you judge a book by its cover?
I certainly did with this one and had it all wrong. This book was nothing that I thought it would be and I’m so glad.
Full disclosure, I listened the the audio version of the book, so I’m not sure how it compares to this graphic novel version.
What I envisioned when I pick out this book that it was going to be a young readers book about racism. What I got was an autobiography of an Editorial Cartoonist who uses his voice and platform to bring the subject of racism to life.
Beginning with a “talk” his mom had with him when he was six years old, Darrin Bell tells a compelling coming of age story. He brings up how major news events throughout history has shaped his own personal life and how he has used the same talk to shape the lives of his children.
If you are someone wanting to have a talk with a child about racism, I highly recommend this book to help guide you in that discussion. Fans of Joel Estes’ “Stand” and “How to be an Antiracist” by Ibram X. Kendi will enjoy this book-especially the audiobook. However, the graphic novel might be a better option when having a discussion.
“The Talk” is now available at Wordsmith Bookshoppe, online at www.wordsmithbookshoppe.com and on Libro.fm!

Monday Morning Review by Teri
The Book of Charlie: Wisdom From the Remarkable American Life of a 109-Year-Old Man by David Von Drehle
David Von Drehle always read books with his children. Every night, he read with them stories that made an impression on them for years to come. As they grew, David found himself drawn to write a book for his children that would impact their lives. But what could he write about? What wisdom could her share?
Here enters Charlie. A neighbor across the street in Kansas City who is well into his late 90s. A man who has lived a full life with amazing stories to tell. A person who found the good in every challenge and situation. A pioneer in the field of medicine who hardly anyone knew.
What drew me to this book to pick it up to read is that Charlie was born right here in Galesburg, Illinois. Oh, how I wished he could have grown up and lived his life here. But to wish that, means that he probably would not have met some famous people-directly or indirectly- through his endeavors. People such as Bat Masterson, Ernest Hemingway, Al Capone, Walt Disney, Harry S. Truman - just to name a few.
From the moment Charlie graduated high school, he was never afraid of adventure and new ideas. He traveled to California in the 1920s at a time when there were no roads to drive on. He traveled the Pacific Ocean on a boat where he played in a band. When he was rejected for college at Northwestern University, he traveled to the college to talk to the dean of students to change his mind about letting him attend classes. He was the top of his class in his pursuit of a medical degree.
A pioneer in medicine, he lived a humble life as a doctor who made house calls. One night, while out making those house calls, a gangster fight broke out right in front of him. One mobster who was shot, needed a blood transfusion to stay alive, Charles proceeded to insert an IV tube into his own arm to deliver blood while he administered care to the man. He became one of the first anesthesiologists in the nation. He was so popular that he was in demand across the nation. He took his medical skills on a mission trip to Haiti.
Through all these adventures, Charlie gained wisdom. David concludes his book by writing down some of those important lessons Charlie learned to pass along to his children.
We should all be blessed to have a neighbor like Charlie at any given time of our lives.
