🌊🧪Classroom knowledge came to life for Ecology students Andrew Genovese, Nicola Tutschek, Briana Cajeira, Luisa Pimienta, Nicole Matta, Cassidy Karlak, and Jalea Wood!
Last week, biology professor Melanie Shroer and our .marine.field.station staff took the students out on the water where they had the chance to sample water quality along a salinity gradient from the inlet to Lower Bank. Students gained hands-on experience and valuable data on how salinity affects aquatic ecosystems. They also had the opportunity to explore the succession [change in vegetation over time driven by disturbances and the maturation of plant species. - USGS.] in the marshes.

🌟Celebrating NAMS Faculty/Student Engagement in Science Education! 🌟
You might have run into NAMS faculty who were out promoting science and outdoor adventures with youth this past week/end.
➡️Sustainability professor Ron Hutchison was one of many professors exhibiting at NatureFest.🌱
➡️Dr. Adam Aguiar helped the kids compete for fishing prizes at the Scouting America Jersey Shore Council at Citta Reservation in Barnegat, and the Lake Lenape run hosted by Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs.🎣
➡️Dana Christensen, Dr. Aguiar, and newly graduated marine biology alumnus Jared Handelman presented at the Cape May Science symposium.🐟
➡️ Dr. Lauren Seyler was live on NASA's "Ask a Astrobiologist" YouTube show from the Schmidt Ocean Institute R/V Falkor Too, as it travels the coast of Chile in search of living fossils along the seafloor. Watch a replay of the episode on YouTube. 🔗in the bio.
We're incredibly proud of NAMS' faculty and students' commitment to STEM education and applaud their efforts to continue to foster connections with our local community.👏🏽🌟
🎉 Welcome to Data Labs 2024🎉
Stockton University works with Rutgers University
on The Ocean Observatories Initiative OOI Ocean Data Labs Project, developing and testing ways for undergrads and their professors to easily use all the raw data we get from (OOI).
This week, join our very own Anna Pfeiffer-Herbert as she co-facilitates a four day workshop focused on
● Learning about the OOI and the data it collects,
● Exploring how to use OOI data in undergrad lesson plans, and

Get your 🔭 out and dusted off for a SPECTACULAR 🤩 event on June 3. Get outside and watch the “Planet Parade” where Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune will appear in a rare alignment in the night sky. This rare occurrence happens by coincidence when the orbits of the planets bring them to roughly the same side of the sun at the same time.

✅Check this out. Biology professor Matthew Bonnan and fellow science majors Justin Andell, Jenna Patterson, Aidan Schwartz, and Madison Schwartz presented their research exploring how elbow shape is correlated with posture in reptiles and mammals, which involved collecting data at the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Joelle Maio, Helen Shim, and Rebecca Yamoah presented a talk on their research modeling how well body shape predicts the death posture/limb posture in small fossil 🦎 animals. The students presented alongside other undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and professors from around the Northeast region.
Kudos to you all!
7️⃣0️⃣ years ago, James Watson, Francis Crick, and Rosalind Franklin discovered DNA's double helix 🧬 and it's been 20 years since the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003. Today we celebrate these life-changing scientific advancements with some fun facts about DNA.
❓ Did you know ... ❓
-humans share about 50% of our genes with plants🌱
-despite our appearance, how we behave, or vulnerable to disease, humans are 99.9% identical in our genetic makeup?
-DNA is our genetic material and carries all instructions from generation to generation
-Every time a cell divides in two (which can be as often as every 4-8 days in some organs such as the intestinal lining), the entire DNA within each cell copies itself exactly, making less than one in a million copying mistakes (mutations). This is how our genetic information is preserved over time
Today is Earth 🌎 Day! Each one of us has the power to make a positive impact - from eliminating single-use plastic water bottles to unplugging devices not in use. Let's renew our commitment to reduce waste and incorporate more sustainable practices in our daily lives. Tell us how you plan on reducing waste?
📣 Calling all science majors❗ Show your support for your fellow science peers and faculty in a celebration of their research achievements during the Scholarship, Teaching, and Research Symposium (STARS) ⭐. Symposiums start next week, April 22 through April 26.

Upper Right: Butterflies from the family Nymphalidae mostly (some examples are: morning cloak, red admiral, painted lady, & monarch)
Left Middle: highlights drawer labels with the orders Odonata (dragonflies & damselflies) & Orthoptera (crickets, grasshoppers, & Katydids)
Central Picture: includes moths from the family Saturniidae
Bottom left: Students in Dr. Steven Shaak’s Entomology lab.
Bottom right: a picture of a female (top) and male (bottom) monarch butterfly.

🌟Student Highlight! Students in the Stockton Marine Technology Society attended the second annual NJ Marine Technology Society Student Chapter Research Symposium in Tuckerton on April 5. The symposium is a low-pressure event where both undergraduate and graduate students are free to collaborate and network 😊 with others in the New Jersey technology community and share their research. Marine Science/Oceanography major and graduating senior Matt Raps presented a poster titled “Detection of eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larvae behavior under hatchery conditions using a particle size analyzer”.
