Connect at UTMB leads after-school tutoring and interactive educational workshops in partnership with Galveston Independent School District to inspire and empower young students in the pursuit of STEAM fields.
Connect at UTMB works to uplift children at Galveston Independent School District schools by offering tutoring services and exposing them to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and art) topics. Below is a photo of current Fellow Salman Farooqui after distributing 200 backpacks and school supplies donated from ICNA Relief to help support GISD students for the academic year.
Congratulations to our tutors and mentors of the semester ๐ฅณ These volunteers were chosen by the Site Coordinators for their enthusiasm and dedication! As we wrap up the semester, we want to say thank you to ALL our volunteers who go above and beyond each week to teach, support, and empower young students. We are grateful for your time and energy!

We wrapped up our Fall 2022 semester with a pizza and letter writing party ๐ A huge shout-out to the students, UTMB volunteers, site coordinators, and GISD for helping make this program possible! This hands-on experiment managed to take our breath away! Using plastic bottles, balloons, straws, and tape, students created lung models and learned how the organ functions in our bodies! ๐ซ
Earlier in November, Connect mentors helped students create their own roller coasters using construction paper and cardboard! ๐ข
A treat-filled experiment just in time for Halloween! Last week, students used pieces of candy to create colorful models of the DNA double helix structure ๐ฌ๐งฌ
Future engineers in the making!๐กDuring our week 4 workshop, UTMB Connect mentors helped students apply concepts of gravity, air resistance, and impact forces to create containers that could protect an egg when dropped!
80ยฐF in October = the perfect weather for homemade ice cream! This week's STEM workshop involved learning about heat transfer and using household ingredients to make vanilla ice cream ๐จ
A little food coloring and some Alka-seltzer tablets can go a long way! This past week, our mentors helped students explore properties such as density and polarity by making DIY lava lamps and rainbow milk ๐ Check out these colorful creations from Austin Middle School below!
Kicking off UTMB Connectโs first tutoring and mentoring sessions of the fall semester! ๐ซ๐๐ฌWe have nearly 150 volunteers across Burnet Elementary, LA Morgan Elementary, Rosenberg Elementary, and Austin Middle School helping lead STEM workshops and provide individualized tutoring support for young students!

Hope yโall are having a great return back from July 4th weekend! UTMB Connect is BACK this Fall 2022 semester to serve GISD, and begin another great semester of volunteering!
Connect at UTMB is a mentorship and tutoring program for socioeconomically disadvantaged GISD elementary and middle school students -- and is the LARGEST community outreach organization at UTMB. Our mission is to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders interpersonally and academically by way of exploring STEM fields, while creating an opportunity for interdisciplinary UTMB student professionals to connect with the Galveston community.
This is a really fun way for you all to obtain a ton of community service experience and leadership, with a low time commitment each week so you can study and get involved with other things!

Our mentees were young engineers for the Egg Drop Workshop last week! Each mentee created their own contraption to prevent their eggs from breaking after a high drop. Thank you everyone for participating and allowing creativity and ingenuity to thrve on each campus!

Hello everyone!
Get excited, UTMB Connect is starting this week, and we can't wait to have all the mentors and tutors at our campuses! We'll be meeting our peers and mentees/tutees and doing IceBreakers to get to know everyone better.

Tutoring is on Tuesdays and mentoring is on Thursdays. Additionally, we'll be handing out t-shirts this week!
