Child Advocacy Center of Galveston County
After a child has reported alleged abuse, the Center coordinates interviews and agency collaboration.
The Advocacy Center for Children of Galveston County is a 501(C)(3) non-profit agency established to improve community response to child abuse in Galveston County. This period is critical, not only for the preparation of a criminal case, but also for the ability to minimize trauma to the child and family. Instead of going to a police station or government office building, the child is brought to t

Meet Emily Zhang with UTMB’s OBGYN Student Society. Emily has been a supporter and volunteer with us and we are so grateful for this beautiful human and the OBGYN Society for a very important donation of “period packs” tampons and pads for the girls that need our Rainbow Room!
Couldn’t say it better than what Emily said herself- “We’re happy to support the Galveston community and make sure women of all ages feel secure and comfortable with their periods!!”
It is with mixed emotion that I sign off on my last post with The Advocacy Center after six years with this amazing organization. I am so grateful for the beautiful relationships I had the honor of forming and the thousands of children and teachers, community members, partner agencies, organizations and parents got to share this wonderful journey with. I love you all.
Love, Candy Hattingh, Community Education Coordinator and Outreach

Child sexual abuse does not discriminate and crosses all socioeconomic, ethnic, and religious barriers. It is not a problem for "those people", it affects all of us and it's a silent endemic that can be stopped if we all believe that ALL children deserve love and safety and we can all do a part to ensure that.
Child sexual abuse is a significant but preventable public health problem. It is often
underreported and some child victims never disclose.
Children will often lie to protect the abuser! Having open and honest conversations with children about body safety is similar to fire safety, it has to happen early, before a fire. Hopefully the child will never experience a fire, but at least they will know what to do if they are in that situation! Telling them it's not their fault and it's never too late to tell are important parts. For more information, please email [email protected]
Just had this conversation with a grandma who told us that she makes sure to teach stranger danger to her grandkids. We love this, but had to inform her that statistically 90% of perpetrators are known to the children they abuse.
Remember it's important to let kids know that no matter who it is, no one has the right to touch or look at private parts for no good reason (like a parent or guarduan applying medicine, a doctor, bathing or changing a young child) or ask you to do it to them. If ANYONE does this, they should tell a trusted adult. Ask your child to identify their trusted adults including family, school personel and adults in extra curricular activities to keep them safe and talk to!
What a truly beautiful day “taking the wind out of child abuse” making pinwheels, spinning the wheel and talking to parents about keeping their little ones safe! Thank you to Galveston’s Own farmers market for hosting us and being part of a community that cares! Thank you to all the vendors and customers that showed up in blue to support the child abuse prevention awareness month, Thank you to our very own Shanda and her mom Allison who volunteered their precious time and Edna Townsend for being Happy Bear!
Encouraging and supporting
your child with open dialogue is a vital step in preventing child sexual abuse. Using proper names for private parts, letting your child know that no matter who it is, if that person is touching in an unsafe or confusing way, they have the right to say NO, move away and let your child make a list of trusted adults at home, in the family and at school that they can share it with! If you would like more info please email [email protected]
