Hurricane Beryl was pretty devastating for Galveston and Harris counties, but my office was spared and we had no interruption of power or services, miraculously. 2023 has been a busy year for ERL, with wins in state district courts, state appellate court, federal district court and the US 5th Circuit court of appeals! A few thoughts on home owners associations... You have to pay dues and assessments or else the HOA takes your property. You have to cut your grass at a certain height, can't build a fence above a certain height, or keep certain items on your property. If you don't follow the "collective rules" a neighbor might snitch you to the HOA and a neighbor HOA director may initiate legal proceedings against you to enforce the restrictions or worse, foreclose on your house. How is that Texan, or even American? Yes, it's the law in Texas, but I don't like that legal scheme and frankly it sounds more like communism to me. Neighbors snitching on neighbors. There are better ways we can have a system where we use our property without impinging on our neighbors--mainly by encouraging a society where we look out for our neighbors instead of snitching on them.
