Our EHSLI Summer Sundays Continue for one more week
Join us Sunday 9/124 at 11:00am -Hybrid Meeting
Guest Speaker: EHSLI Board President Richard DiCecio
Discussion: Back to the Future
COVID interrupted our daily lives for over two years… zoom and other electronic devices enabled us to have some semblance of connection to our loved ones and friends and for many, it allowed them to work, socialize, be intellectually challenged, and to be entertained and amused!! What were we, at EHSLI, doing before COVID? Some of those activities have resumed. Platforms, fund raiser talks, and most recently, the once-a-month Coffee House for example. This Sunday I hope to elicit your ideas for ‘Back to Future’. What activities from our past would you like to see us resume? What new ideas did you or your group come up with. How could you see yourself having a role in making your ideas happen. All this while being in a group of members new and ‘old’.

Yes, THAT Julie Gold, the Greenwich Village Fast Folk songwriting legend, whose “From a Distance,” as recorded by Bette Midler, won the Grammy for Song of the Year in 1991 and has been played on the radio close to 5 million times!
Besides the Divine Miss M, the song has been recorded by Nancy Griffith, Jewel, Cliff Richard, The African Children’s Choir, Judy Collins, The Byrds and Donna Summer.
Other artists who have recorded Julie Gold songs include Patti LaBelle, Patti LuPone, Lea Salonga, Andrea Marcovicci, Carol Woods, Sinead O’Connor and Kathie Lee Gifford, and her jingle “We’re 4 New York” was used by WNBC TV for years.
She’s also written books enjoyed by children and adults.
Through it all, she is still a down-to-Earth songwriter from Philadelphia with great stories to tell, songs to sing, who hasn’t let it all go to her head. She doesn’t do concerts as often as she used to, so don’t miss this opportunity!
Still not convinced?

Open Mic 7:30 Mad Agnes performance 8:30
38 Old Country Road, Garden City, NY
Mad Agnes is what happens when 3 incredibly creative, talented, classically trained musicians devote themselves to folk music.
It ain’t your typical 3-chord songs!
Mad Agnes has won hearts on two continents with their signature intricate harmonies and compelling songwriting. The genre-bending trio—Margo Hennebach, Adrienne Jones and Mark Saunders—weaves contemporary folk with a nod to Celtic, an element of vocal improv and top-notch arrangements into an exciting, inclusive performance.
Lately using only one microphone, early-radio style, they transport and tickle audiences using guitars, mandolin, percussion, an inventive keyboard and three-part harmonies as tight as jeans from the dryer.
Their 5th and most recent album, Likely Story – An Eclectic Collection of Songs for the Soul, hit the Top-10 on the Folk Alliance International Radio Chart this past February.

Where: Zoom
How: Details Below
OPERA’S MOST FAMOUS MELODIES
Monday, May 20th NEW DATE
7:00-8:30
see below for information on signing up
Many people have the idea that opera involves overweight singers standing on stage and bellowing loud noises in a boring, sleep inducing production. That may be true, to some extent, when the singing, staging and conducting is poor to mediocre.
Mel Haber would like to demonstrate, on the other hand, that opera singing can be beautiful and exciting if the singers are wonderful and the music melodic.
Come to this program to see and hear videos of great singers singing the most popular of arias, duets, quartets, and sextets.
Because so many people like to compare singers, Mel is going to include three arias each sung by two different singers. After hearing each aria, we will get to discuss which singer we liked better and why.
You don’t have to know anything about opera, nor do you ever have to have gone to an opera to appreciate this program. You are welcome even if you have a negative opinion of the opera you have heard so far.
Some of the music you will hear is so famous that it’s likely you will recognize and enjoy many of the arias and duets that will be played.
