Staff and students from Lake Ridge New Tech Schools joined in on the fun and festivities of National Night Out that took place Tuesday, August 6th at Rail Cat Stadium in Gary.

Sponsored by the Gary Police Department and the Office of Gary Mayor Eddie Melton, National Night Out Celebrates the coming together of communities large and small to combat crime in their neighborhoods.

Lake Ridge New Tech School Board member Sam Roberts is a Captain on the Gary Police Department, he encourages the Lake Ridge New Tech Schools to take part in National Night Out. "It is a good time to meet your neighbor. Crime drops when communities look out for one another. I like to see the Lake Ridge families come to the ball park to meet police officers and enjoy themselves," he said.

Lake Ridge New Tech Schools Superintendent Dr. Sharon Johnson Shirley joined Lake Ridge staff in manning the swag-filled Lake Ridge table. "It was a very nice evening seeing and meeting current and former Lake Ridge students. After visiting our table I think we gained some future Lake Ridge students as well. Our staff was very energetic they met with several members of the community. That is what National Night Out is all about, meeting people and talking to them."

The main office area of Calumet New Tech High School looks more like a scene from an episode of one of those shows on HGTV where the contractors go in and demolish everything in sight.

The reason for the "Under Construction" sign at the high school may not be as lofty as changing the interior from Traditional to Urban Farmhouse, but it is far more important.

Lake Ridge New Tech Schools Superintendent Dr. Sharon Johnson Shirley said it gives the front office more control over who is entering the building. "We're doing it for safety. Safety for our students and safety for our staff. It's going to make it a lot easier when people come in. They will be screened, and then they can come in and make their appointments. We are really excited about the opportunity to make our schools as safe as possible."

The work should be completed in December, but like all construction it creates an inconvenience. CNTHS Principal Chris Bajmakovich said the work was planned for the job to be as least disruptive as possible. "The good news is it will not interrupt our school day. All of the demolition is being done prior to students getting here, and it will be done before school starts. The remodeling will take place after school. A temporary wall will be built around where the construction will be done."

The Principal added, "We will not use the "Door A" entrance during construction. "Door B" will be used as the temporary main entrance. Parents who drop their students off will be rerouted around the construction zone to Door E. Bus riders will be dropped off and picked up at "Door U".
"When this is all finished it will improve and increase the safety of all students and staff in our school."

The first official day of school is not until August 14th. Still, several new and returning teachers gathered at Calumet New Tech High School on Tuesday, August 6th for computer training in The New Tech Network's Minute-By-Minute classroom lesson planning.

The New Tech Network is a K-12 Education Model that emphasizes project-based learning by integrating authentic classroom projects created by students.

Lake Ridge New Tech Middle School Instructional Coach Kyle Stephens recently attended a week-long New Tech Network Training session in Minneapolis, Minnesota where they were taught the Minute-By-Minute Lesson Planning concept.

Stephens who also taught in the model at one time, said the object of Minute-By-Minute Lesson Planning is for teachers to fill students' class time with learning, "Their everyday minute-to-minute planning so that as soon as they walk into class, they have from the start of class until end of it mapped out for what they are going to do with their students during that time."

According to Calumet New Tech High School Instructional Coach Melissa Klahn, who previously taught English in the model, minute-by-minute, lesson planning urges teachers to be more specific, "It breaks down their plans so students are getting education and knowledge every single minute of class time," she said.

Lake Ridge New Tech School Board President Kim Osteen served on the Legislative Committee of the Indiana School Board Association to set the education agenda for the 2025 Indiana General Assembly.

The panel met in Indianapolis on July 26th among the issues prioritized were: Textbook Reimbursement, Curricular materials, grant funding for student support services, opportunities for deregulation, regulatory relief, and school board governance matters.

Osteen said the issues are a vital part of school operations, "it affects Social-Emotional Learning funding, English Language Learners, Summer School projects, School Safety, School Guidance Counsellors, and more money for teachers and STEM Grants."

Osteen said that while she was honored to serve on the committee, she is concerned about the future of public education in the Hoosier state. "This is an election year for both the President and the Governor of Indiana. It will be critical for public school education who we elect."

Juneteenth Celebrates the day slavery ended in the state of Texas, two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery in January of 1863.
