All schools in the Gary Community School Corporation will be closed Monday, September 2nd in observance of Labor Day. Everyone have a safe and happy holiday and we will see you Tuesday!

On the morning of Friday August 30th, an odd smell was identified at Bethune Early Childhood Development Center. Representatives from NIPSCO and the Gary Fire Department have been alerted and are investigating. As a safety precaution, students are being dismissed for the day and staff dispatched to other buildings.

Special thanks to the Bethune team for being alert and for parents and community stakeholders for their patience and understanding.

Instructions regarding bus transportation and other logistics, as previously communicated with parents and guardians, will remain in place.

Update on Banneker Elementary at Marquette

Dear Banneker at Marquette students and families,

We are writing to inform you that the work on the HVAC system in the building is progressing but still not yet complete. With tomorrow's temperatures set to escalate, the decision has been made to hold in-person classes at the Gary Area Career Center, 1800 E. 35th Ave. on Wednesday, August 28th.

Further instructions regarding bus transportation and other logistics will be communicated directly to parents and guardians.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will be sure to make contact with an update on the repair and the status of instruction for the remainder of the week.

Due to the ongoing extreme heat conditions, Banneker Elementary at Marquette will remain closed today, Tuesday, August 27th, as we work to regulate the school’s temperatures.

In addition, all middle school athletics are canceled for today, Tuesday, August 27th. (The middle school football game in Griffith has been canceled.)

All high school athletic teams have been instructed to practice indoors with no exceptions.

The health and safety of our students and staff remain our utmost concern, and we appreciate your understanding.

Greetings parents, guardians and stakeholders of the Gary Community School Corporation. As summer comes to a close, we are experiencing high temperatures as customary with this time of year. We are pleased to share that air condition is functioning properly in all buildings with the exception of Banneker Elementary at Marquette. Our facilities team is working to address the repair and early dismissal will take place at 1:00 p.m. Students will receive lunch, and parents/guardians are be notified accordingly.

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we inform our school family that our beloved school security officer, Mr. Clarence Royster, passed away unexpectedly over the weekend.

Mr. Royster was a special person who cared deeply about the students and staff of Williams Elementary. We are all so grateful for his courage and love.

We are going to miss Mr. Royster very much. Please join us as we pray for his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Alexis A. Nelson and the B.E.S.T. Foundation (Be Exceptional Support Together) graciously donated school supplies to each of our classrooms. The Bethune family is so grateful for their support.
