Thanks to Helen Newton, GCAG plein air painters learning the art of painting trees during our critique today. Artists acted out tree gestures and observed the importance of values, planes and light source when painting trees. We shared our sketches and paintings for suggestions. Helen always makes it fun!
GCAG plein air painters enjoying an excellent gouache workshop by artist, Helen Newton. Helen spiced it up with music, dance and poetry. She shared her love of art and introduced her tools and favorite books. Gouache is challenging, however, perfect for plein air studies.
Richard Martinez had a big crowd at his presentation for the GCAG’s May Meeting. He brought a bunch of artwork in watercolor and pastels and donated the money from the sale to the Gaston County Art Guild. He sold every painting, except 1. A big thank you to Richard Martinez and everyone that purchased a piece of his wonderful artwork.

GCAG plein air group ecstatic to be outdoors today in downtown Belmont! Perfect weather to paint urban landscapes.
Discover the artistry of Janet Croog, a juried member of local ArtPop Street Gallery, class of 2024. Janet creates white paper sculptures using low-relief layering techniques. Additionally, Janet actively engages with the art community, building connections with fellow artists and art enthusiasts through authentic networking and collaboration. She will share insights into her artistic process and discuss her journey in maintaining a creative business.
The Natural View’s second opening was held at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. We had yet another selection of wonderful artwork to view. Dr. Brad Sabelli addressed the audience explaining the process he uses for evaluating artwork. We then moved to the entrance of the botanical garden where the ribbons were awarded. The awards started with the merit awards and built up to the best of show. They were as follows:
Dunja Earley-merit award Varsha Pradhan - merit award. Janet K Baxter - 3rd place. Ronald Shepard - 2nd place. Susanne Hawthorn - 1st place. Janet Croog - Best of Show. Show committee:Carol Stowe Rankin, Dunja Earley, and Joan Widenhouse
Special thanks to our Judge and Juror for his detail account of all the art that placed, and his sharing of what makes a great work of art.
