Cold weather is quickly approaching as the year ends and with so many homeowners leaving Gatlinburg for different climates the need to winterize your home has never been more important. Below are a few steps to help you winterize. If you feel you cannot perform these tasks, please contact a plumber or maintenance professional to complete as needed.

• Turn off the water at the meter. This will require a valve installed between the meter and the customer’s house. The valve on the Water Department side of the meter is not designed to be turned off as you come and go, and improper use of this valve could cause it to fail. Please contact a plumber to have a valve installed if one does not presently exist.

• Open all faucets and drain all waterlines. Be sure to turn off the gas supply or power supply to your hot water heaters before you drain them. When turning off the power be sure to drain booster pump systems as required by manufacturer suggestions. Follow all manufacturer procedures to winterize other appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, whole house filter systems, refrigerators, irrigation systems, etc. Although draining all of these items through gravity might be adequate, some lines might need to be blown out with compressed air.

Contact a plumber or maintenance professional for this. Eliminate or dilute the water in drain traps by pouring an "RV" type antifreeze solution into them. “RV” type is nontoxic propylene glycol antifreeze sold for recreational vehicles. If a house will be vacant for a long time, close all sink and tub drains. You may prevent water in a toilet’s trap from evaporating (and thereby permitting sewer gases to enter the home) by raising the toilet lid and seat and covering the bowl with saran wrap.

• Adjust the thermostat. Set your thermostat to a level adequate to keep the inside temperature above freezing, 56 - 58 degrees is recommended. If a hot water boiler, heat pump, or radiant floor heat system is used, then we recommend VERY strongly that it be handled by a HVAC professional familiar with these systems.

• Warning. Last of all, post signs in conspicuous locations (“Winterized - Do Not use Plumbing”) just in case there are unexpected visitors.

CONTRACTORS: Please ensure that any exposed services or temporary connections at the meter are insulated or disconnected prior to the freeze.

Just a few simple touches can really make a big difference. Something as uncomplicated as replacing a faucet can bring a splash of style and savings to your bathroom. The best thing about a bathroom with WaterSense labeled fixtures is that you get to save nearly 10,000 gallons of water every year.

Look for the WaterSense label on toilets, faucets, and showerheads to make your better bathroom. WaterSense labeled products are independently certified to use at least 20 percent less water and perform as well as or better than standard models. Find your better bathroom at https://www.epa.gov/watersense/your-better-bathroom.

Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service of their country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.

In other words, the purpose of Memorial Day is to memorialize the veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

We spend time remembering those who lost their lives and could not come home, reflecting on their service and why we have the luxury and freedom that we enjoy today

Dear Chalet Village Residents:

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch which references potential for significant winter weather in this area. TWS operators are currently completing final preparations for this event, and we would like to provide information for what to expect and how best to prepare.

Potential power outages will create the need to operate water pumping equipment with diesel driven back up power generators. Homes located near our facilities can expect some increase to noise generated by this equipment.

Conditions resulting from this storm may also prevent TWS operations from being able to operate equipment remotely and road conditions may limit our ability to access every site to operate equipment manually especially in higher elevations. We will assess road conditions and do not plan to travel in areas unless deems safe to do so including limiting travel to only daylight hours due to the risk from ice being less visible over the roadways during the night.

Chalet Village residents should be prepared for potential water outages, especially those who live in the higher elevations. A supply of bottled water is recommended, and it is also a good idea to capture water in a bathtub or other large container when possible. We suggest preparing as far in advance as possible.TWS will communicate any pending outage in as much advance as possible so please monitor your notifications closely during this time.

It is our intention to maintain full service during this event and will work diligently to restore any loss of service as safely and quickly as possible.

If you have any questions concerning this notification, please call 800-531-2321 or email [email protected].

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Tiffany Van Horn
President
