Parents are often the first to recognize that something isn’t quite right about their child’s teeth or jaw. You may notice your child’s teeth not fitting together, difficulty chewing or biting, mouth breathing or other issues. When you notice something, it’s time to get it checked out. Sometimes it’s more than meets the eye. Two-thirds of what goes on in the mouth happens below the surface. Your child may have impacted canines, preventing adult teeth from erupting properly. Let us take a look and see what is happening below the surface with an x-ray. The AAO suggests children be seen by an Orthodontist at age 7.

In addition to being National Orthodontic Health Month, October is also National Dental Hygiene Month! 🪥So much to smile about this month! 😀Good oral hygiene is even more important when you are in braces. Be sure to see your Dentist for regular hygiene appointments throughout your treatment. ✅

Flu season is just around the corner and Covid is still around. Remember that when you’ve been sick and start feeling better, the first thing you should do is get a new toothbrush PLEASE! 🦠Nasty germs that could re-infect you can hide in your old toothbrush no matter how carefully you clean it, so out with the old and in with the new! 🪥

We make braces affordable for everyone with our flexible financing options! Set up a complimentary appointment to find out if orthodontic treatment is right for you or your child and how we can make it fit into your family budget.

Once your perfect new smile is complete, you will be given retainers of some type to keep your teeth from moving (they have an amazing memory and will try). Removable retainers can be metal and acrylic or clear plastic ones. Here are some tips on how to keep your removable retainers clean and fresh:
▪ Always use a soft bristle toothbrush when cleaning your retainer. Just use water, do not use toothpaste. The abrasives in toothpaste can scratch your retainer. Scratches are a perfect place for bacteria to settle and grow.
▪ Don’t scrub too hard. Even a soft bristle toothbrush can scratch the surface if you brush heavily.
▪ Make sure to brush your retainer on all sides and surfaces. The retainer is in your mouth for hours at a time, so it’s important to brush every bit of it.
▪ You can also soak your retainer in a denture cleaner occasionally to freshen it and kill germs that sit in the grooves of the mold. Don’t soak your retainer too often—once a week or so is best and brush it afterwards.
▪ If you prefer, you can also soak your retainer in non-alcoholic mouthwash to remove odors and kill bacteria. Mix equal parts mouthwash and lukewarm water. Only soak your retainer in this solution for about an hour. Then brush and rinse with warm water.
▪ Don’t forget to keep your retainer case clean, too. Frequently scrub it with warm, soapy water, rinse off, and dry.

Yes … elastic wear or lack of it, when prescribed, influences your treatment time! Elastics should be worn exactly as the doctor prescribes. If you forget to wear them, do not double up the next day – that won’t make your teeth move any faster and it could make your mouth very sore. Follow the doctor’s instructions and we’ll get the movement we need to help you reach your deband date on time! Remember that you can always drop by our office during business hours if you need additional elastics.

If your teeth feel a little extra sensitive after an adjustment, don’t be alarmed! For most patients, any pain or discomfort felt after an adjustment is short lived, lasting a few hours to a few days, and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. If you take this before the adjustment, you may not experience any discomfort at all. You can also use an oral anesthetic to lightly numb any painful areas of the mouth. Applying a warm compress to the outside of the jaw for ten to fifteen minutes at a time can also help as well as rinsing with warm saltwater several times a day!
