MEDICO

It is with deep sadness that we share the recent passing of Bob Gurmankin, DDS, a long-time dedicated volunteer with MEDICO. It was Bob’s many times of sharing a week of service that made an impact on MEDICO’s mission efforts in Central America. Bob shared his skills, taught hundreds of school students the importance of good dental hygiene, mentored young dentists as they participated on at team and always displayed his big heart in support of reaching out where there was a need. We are deeply grateful for Bob’s support of MEDICO’s dental program and his ongoing willingness to always make sure we were providing the best care possible to those were served.
Bob was a quiet man, but his impact was loud and clear. He served as a MEDICO board member and later stepped into the presidency position. MEDICO is grateful for his dedication and service.

A great team of volunteers, wonderful team hosts, rain, truck rides, superman outfits, delicious food, fun rides on a tuk-tuk, bird sanctuary, providing medical and dental care to hundreds, health education to students, cultural dances, and beds and showers at night at the Hacienda were all part of a MEDICO week of service! Day TWO has finished for the MEDICO team in Copan. Another great day of service in the field! While each clinic area was hopping with patients that were transported down from the surrounding mountains, as you can see by the photos, there was dental hygiene instructions being taught to students in the local school and Days for Girl's education being brought to young women and mothers. The beauty of the Copan area and the Hacienda where the team is lodging is not to be missed.
Yesterday's patient count was 37 in the dental clinic - with MANY fillings being done - and 96 patients assessed in the medical clinic.
Thank you MEDICO volunteers and all the wonderful folks who have joined the team or are supporting the team with translating, driving trucks, cooking, cleaning, and hosting our team. It takes partnering together to make a difference. www.medico.org

Day ONE on a MEDICO team.
Arriving only last evening to Copan, Honduras, the MEDICO team was rocking this morning with patients as the clinic opened to families who were trucked in from surrounding communities. As the day progressed, more families would arrive waiting to see a doctor or a dentist. Before noon, 40 patients had already been assessed in the medical area and the health education team was preparing for their classes. Our story reaches back to August 1990 when MEDICO was first established. Over the years, many impactful community projects have evolved and expanded. Hundreds of volunteer teams have shared time in underserved remote communities. Many dedicated volunteers and generous donors have supported our mission and brought us to where we are today.

It’s been a busy time for MEDICO volunteers serving this week in Copan Ruinas. Each day more families come by bus or are transported by truck to come to receive free medical services at the local clinic. In between the hours of working, the volunteers find a moment here and there to take a few photos and share some special bonding with each other. Thank you MEDICO team!

And away they went!! MEDICO’s October 2022 team is serving in western Honduras this week providing medical, dental, eye care and health education to many of the surrounding villages of Copan Ruinas. We salute all our veteran team members and welcome new volunteers to the organization. Wishing them well as they share their time and talents in the mission field.
