Physicians will order an ultrasound to detect abnormalities in blood vessels and are often used to evaluate growth during pregnancy and fetal anatomy. Ultrasound is a painless, safe imaging technique that does not use any form of radiation exposure. A typical ultrasound examination will take about 30 minutes to complete.

Ultrasound is painless and is administered using a tool called a transducer, which is placed on the skin to examine a specific body part. Sound waves are emitted by the transducer, which then bounces off the structure that is being examined. As a technologist scans the body using the transducer, sound waves create an image which is displayed on a monitor. The movement and structure of the body’s organs and blood flowing through blood vessels can be seen in the ultrasound images because they are captured in real-time. Once the images are obtained, they are sent to a radiologist to read.

CT scans are very fast compared to other imaging modalities with the longest scans taking only a few minutes. Most appointments that have not been ordered with IV contrast can be completed in ten to fifteen minutes. If IV contrast has been ordered, a few extra minutes are allotted for the technologist to place an IV and to go over some general questions about your health. Regardless of what your doctor has ordered, the technologist will make sure all of your questions about the exam are answered and that you are informed and comfortable.

There are two categories of contrast for CT scans – Oral contrast and Intravenous (IV) contrast. Both help the reading radiologist easily see what can be subtle differences between closely spaced structures and organs in your body. Depending on what your doctor has ordered and what they are trying to diagnose, you may receive one of these or both. If a study requiring oral contrast has been ordered, you will receive two bottles of flavored drink with instructions on how and when to drink them. If IV contrast has been ordered the technologist will go over some general health questions before your exam and, if necessary, will review the results of a simple blood test.

One common misconception about MRI is that if you have any medical devices inside your body, you cannot get an MRI. While that is true is some cases, many medical manufacturers design their equipment to be MRI safe.
Patients with the following medical devices can be safely examined with MRI:
• Surgical clips or sutures
• Artificial joints
• Staples
• Most cardiac valve replacements
• Disconnected medication pumps
• Vena cava filters (after 6 weeks for certain types)
• Most brain shunt tubes for hydrocephalus
• Metal stents
Some conditions may make MRI examination inadvisable. Tell your doctor if you have any of the following conditions:
• Heart pacemaker
• Cerebral aneurysm clip (metal clip on a blood vessel in the brain)
• Pregnancy
• Implanted insulin pump (for treatment of diabetes), narcotics pump (for pain medication), or implanted nerve stimulators (“TENS”) for back pain
• Metal in the eye or eye socket
• Cochlear (ear) implant for hearing impairment
• Weight of more than 500 pounds
• Inability to lie on back for 15 to 40 minutes
• Claustrophobia (fear of closed or narrow spaces). Please note: if this condition applies to you, some patients may be candidates for medication that will help if prior arrangements have been made.
Allow an hour for your MRI exam but in most cases, the procedure takes 20 to 45 minutes, during which several dozen images will be obtained.

What Are Contrast Materials?
Most often used in CT scans, contrast materials — sometimes referred to as CT scan dyes — are liquid pharmaceutical agents used to improve the body images taken during a scan by making your organs, tissue types, blood vessels or other parts of your body stand out significantly in the scan. By highlighting or “dying” specific areas within your body, contrast agents make it easier to examine the targeted organs and detect any issues.
Common Contrast Materials
Before a scan, you may be asked to take your contrast agent either orally, via injection, rectally with an e***a or through inhalation for specific brain and lung imaging. Injection and ingestion are the most commonly used methods. Each type of contrast agent works slightly different. Here’s how:
Ingested contrast materials: These agents enhance images of the pelvis and abdomen through the use of Barium Sulfate or Gastrografin. Patients will drink about 36 to 48 ounces of the material to fill their stomach and intestines for highlighted images.
Injected contrast materials: Intravenous contrasts highlight blood vessels or enhance the tissue structure and appearance of various organs like the kidneys, liver, brain, and spine. The intravenous iodine agent is injected into the patient’s hand or arm and works its way into the bloodstream, circulating through the heart to throw the kidneys and liver into contrast.

Contrast Materials
When you’re recommended for a diagnostic imaging scan like an X-ray, MRI, ultrasound or CT scan, you might not know exactly what it entails, how to prepare or what agents it involves. To feel more comfortable moving forward with your procedure, you want to do a little research.
An X-ray scan employs high electromagnetic energy to take an internal image of the targeted portion of your body, while an ultrasound collects data to make an image by transmitting sound waves through your body. A CT scan — or Computerized Tomography scan — is a special kind of X-ray scan that takes cross-sectional body images. An MRI generates cross-sectional images using radio waves and a magnetic field instead of X-rays. All three exams are used to scan internal organs, examine specific parts of the body, search for issues, and diagnose diseases.
In some cases, diagnostic scans require a patient to take contrast materials before the procedure to assist with the imaging. To give you peace of mind, simplify the details and educate you before your scan, here’s everything you need to know about contrast materials in diagnostic imaging scans.

Clinical Trials are at the heart of medical research and are critical to finding new paths to prevent, detect and advance new treatment methods and medications for debilitating diseases. Patients with an illness or disease participate in Clinical Trials in order to receive the benefits of the newest treatment options for recovering from their disease and to offer the best opportunity for researchers to find better treatments for others in the future. Treatments may involve new drugs or new combinations of drugs, new surgical procedures or devices, or new ways to use existing treatments. The goal of clinical trials is to determine if a new test or treatment works and is safe and may also investigate other aspects of patient care, such as improving the quality of life for people with chronic illnesses.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, causing nearly 30 percent of cancer deaths across the country. Of the more than 7,000 chemicals in to***co smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful, including hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia. Among those, at least 69 can cause cancer. While we are all aware that smoking causes cancer, smoking also harms nearly every bodily organ and organ system in the body and diminishes a person’s overall health. Among the cancers caused are: lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, liver, pancreas, stomach, cervix, colon, and re**um, as well as acute myeloid leukemia. Smoking also causes heart disease, stroke, aortic aneurysm, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (chronic bronchitis and emphysema), diabetes, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, age-related macular degeneration, and cataracts, and worsens asthma symptoms in adults. There is no safe level of smoking. Smoking even just one cigarette per day over a lifetime can cause smoking-related cancers and premature death.

When Cheryl and her husband of thirty-five years sold their business and headed off to retirement, they looked forward to having more time to dedicate to their three children and four grandchildren. Discovering a lump in her left breast while on vacation dramatically altered their retirement plans and her outlook on the future. With no family history of breast cancer, the results of her mammogram were stunning. Cheryl was diagnosed with Stage 2 triple negative ductal carcinoma breast cancer.
Cheryl is not unlike many thousands of women who receive an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis. While aware of the disease and its impact on the lives of those suffering from it, the thought of receiving the bad news is one stuck in the back of the mind, hopefully never to be realized.
In 2018, an estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 63,960 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer. Death rates have been decreasing since 1989, but approximately 40,920 women in the U.S. are expected to die in 2018 from breast cancer. About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. The two most common risk factors are gender and growing older. While you can’t change some breast cancer risk factors there are some risk factors that you can control.
