When I was a kid, growing up in central NJ, a man used to come through the neighborhood on a bicycle with a workbench on which he sharpened knives. He'd ring a bell as he came through the neighborhood to get attention.
Although he didn't sharpen our knives, my uncle did, it's still a powerful childhood memory.
How about giving the gift of getting knives sharpened professionally - for Christmas?
One of the best kept secrets in Chinatown at 120 Elizabeth Street in NYC, is this gentleman, Ah Bao, who sets up shop outside just about every day of the week, come rain or shine, or zero temp weather. What does he do? Knife and scissor sharpening and shoe and zipper repair and his prices are ridiculously affordable – I mean, just $5 to sharpen a knife!! Consider taking your knives or scissors to him or maybe make it a gift for one of your foodie friends? ,
