Knee osteoarthritis (OA) slowed Glenda Survant down. Her stage 4 OA is "bone-on-bone" which is degenerative and results in chronic pain and inflammation. For Glenda, she could not walk well and had pain keeping her from a good night's rest as the inflammation persisted. When Glenda fell resulting in an injury on top of the OA, her physician told her it was time for a total knee replacement surgery.
The challenge to the recommended surgery was that it only gave Glenda 10 weeks to recover and prepare to walk and climb for her already scheduled Mediterranean trip. Glenda and the physical therapy team rose to the occasion. Under the care of Physical Therapist Emily Wright, Glenda had set rehabilitation goals and began completing exercises.
"It was hard to trust my new knee in the beginning. I had pain and stiffness after surgery," she said. "Getting out of a chair and walking up and down stairs was difficult."
Glenda, however, made progress every week. Her hard work was paying off as the measurements of her knee/flexion and extension proved. Her personal goal of being able to walk up 80 steps to the top of the Greek Parthenon was within reach.
"Emily was wonderful. She knew how to motivate me toward my goal and did it with a sweet smile," she said. "Even another therapist, Micha, cheered me on."
Glenda met her goals and walked the Parthenon steps. Three months after surgery, she has shared she is back to walking five miles a day and exercising without limitation.
We are so excited to hear about your overseas accomplishments, Glenda. Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.

Happy Earth Day! You can grow a greener world with our five occupational therapist-approved tools for getting out in the garden pain-free.
1. Raised garden beds: Raised beds at waist-height or slightly elevated can minimize bending and make it easier to reach plants without strain.
2. Garden carts, wagons or wheelbarrows: Use carts or wheelbarrows with oversized wheels for transporting soil, plants and tools around the garden with less effort.
3. Ergonomic garden tools: Tools with ergonomic handles and extended reach options can reduce strain on hands and wrists. Look for lightweight yet sturdy options.
4. Watering wand: A watering wand with an adjustable nozzle and a long handle can make watering plants easier, especially for reaching hanging baskets or tall plants.
5. Garden kneeler: A padded garden kneeler with handles can provide support and cushioning for kneeling while planting or weeding.
