As young women enter the work place, like it or not, they will soon learn we are judged on our appearance. Image and success are inextricably tied.

Teens that pay attention to their image; are more likely to receive recognition, p

Great quote from Jennifer Lawrence, who starred as Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games" film: "In Hollywood, I'm obese. I'm considered a fat actress. I'm never going to starve myself for a part. I keep waiting for that one role to come along that scares me enough into dieting and it just can't happen. I'm invincible. I don't want little girls to be like, 'Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I'm going to skip dinner. That's something I was really conscious of during training. I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong — not thin and underfed."

A Mighty Girl
While visiting Cambridge last year, 17-year-old Jinan Younis and several friends were harassed by a group of men in a car. After she challenged them, they became more verbally abusive and threw coffee at her. As she writes in a recent op-ed in the UK’s The Guardian newspaper, “For those men we were just legs, breasts and pretty faces. Speaking up shattered their fantasy, and they responded violently to my voice.”
After returning home, she became more aware of, as she described, “how much the girls at my school suffer because of the pressures associated with our gender” and decided to start a feminist society at her school to address these issues. However, once the group was formed, Younis and her society became the target of vicious, hateful backlash from boys in her peer group, saying things on Twitter like “feminism and r**e are both ridiculously tiring” and “cute, they got offended,” as well as far more offensive attacks.
She observed that, “The more girls started to voice their opinions about gender issues, the more vitriolic the boys' abuse became... I fear that many boys of my age fundamentally don't respect women. They want us around for parties, banter and most of all s*x. But they don't think of us as intellectual equals, highlighted by accusations of being hysterical and over sensitive when we attempted to discuss serious issues facing women.”
When the society took part in the Who Needs Feminism? photo project, their photos became the target of more harassment -- and threats. Younis writes: “We, a group of 16-, 17- and 18-year-old girls, have made ourselves vulnerable by talking about our experiences of s*xual and gender oppression only to elicit the wrath of our male peer group. Instead of our school taking action against such intimidating behaviour, it insisted that we remove the pictures.... girls who had participated in the campaign were isolated, facing a great deal of verbal abuse with the full knowledge that there would be no repercussions for the perpetrators.”
Based on use of social media for much of this harassment, Younis asserts, “we have a whole new battleground opening up online where boys can attack, humiliate, belittle us and do everything in their power to destroy our confidence before we even leave high school." And, she concludes, "If you thought the fight for female equality was over, I'm sorry to tell you that a whole new round is only just beginning.”
Fortunately, there are brave young women like Jinan Younis and her fellow society members ready to stand up for themselves -- and girls and women everywhere.

How often should you wash your hair?
