🎉🥊 Join us today in celebrating the 30th anniversary of UFC 1! 🎉🥊

Three decades ago, on this very day, the world of martial arts was forever changed by one extraordinary event. UFC 1, masterminded by Rorian Gracie of the legendary Gracie family, took place, and its impact still reverberates today.

In one evening, the Gracie family showcased their revolutionary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique, defying the conventional norms of martial arts. Their innovative ground fighting style astounded the world and left a lasting impression on the combat sports community.

On this night Royce Gracie represented the family in this groundbreaking event to win 3 matches in the elimination tournament and to mark the birth of the Ultimate Fighting Championship but also paved the way for the evolution of mixed martial arts (MMA) as we know it.

The Gracies' mastery of their family style on the ground demonstrated the importance of technique, strategy, and leverage, forever changing the perception of fighting. In the early days it was style v style not fighter v fighter.

UFC 1 shattered preconceived notions about what a fighter should look like, breaking the barriers of weight classes and bringing together competitors from various martial arts backgrounds. It was a true testament to the power of skill, determination, and adaptability.

So, let's take a moment to appreciate Royce and the Gracie family's incredible contribution to the world of martial arts. Join us as we honor the 30th anniversary of UFC 1 and acknowledge the profound impact it had on shaping combat sports history.

🥋🇧🇷 On the historic night of September 12, 1936, all eyes were on the eagerly awaited clash between two formidable opponents. Helio Gracie, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu icon, faced off against Massagoichi, a judo black belt and sumo wrestler hailing from Japan. Massagoichi, weighing in at 80 kilograms (176 pounds), was no ordinary adversary.

👊 The atmosphere was electric, with the crowd buzzing in anticipation. At precisely 11:17pm the bout commenced, and Massagoichi launched a fierce attack, catching Helio off guard. Helio briefly found himself on the mat, but his determination and skill soon shone through.

💪 Helio quickly recovered, showcasing his resilience and strategic prowess. He turned the tables on Massagoichi, taking control of the fight. It's worth noting that Massagoichi, recognizing Helio's reputation for strangleholds, assumed an unconventional defensive position known as the "turtle position." He stayed in this defensive stance for several minutes, protecting his neck and frustrating Helio's stranglehold attempts.

🤼‍♂️ The referee eventually intervened and instructed the fighters to restart on their feet. Helio Gracie, confident in his superior ground game, seized the opportunity. With a sudden move, he brought Massagoichi to the ground and swiftly applied a powerful armlock. Massagoichi, prepared to defend against strangulation, had not anticipated this tactic, and he offered little resistance, surrendering just 13 minutes into the first round.

🥇 This historic match underlined Helio Gracie's exceptional martial arts talent and adaptability. Despite Massagoichi's defensive strategy, Helio's strategic shift to the armlock proved decisive, cementing his place in martial arts history.

🌟 On this day in history! 🗓️

Back on July 28, 1934, pitting the mighty Wladek Zbyszko against the indomitable Hélio Gracie.

🔹 Weighing in at a staggering 235 pounds, Zbyszko was an imposing figure, towering over the well-built frame of Hélio Gracie.

🔹 Under a "no strikes" agreement, the match spanned three intense ten-minute rounds. Zbyszko, utilizing his sheer size and strength, relentlessly aimed to bring Hélio down and overpower him, attempting to squeeze the life out of his valiant opponent.

🔹 Hélio courageously fought off Zbyszko's onslaught throughout the grueling rounds, preventing him from achieving a definitive victory. When time expired, the match was declared a draw.

📰 Wladek Zbyszko himself was so impressed by Hélio's performance that he expressed a desire to bring him to North America.

Today, only a few people are aware of the true origins of jujutsu in Brazil, or as it became famous, Jiu-Jitsu. Back in the 1930s, the Academia Gracie, situated in a house in the borough of Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro, served as a vibrant hub for students from diverse backgrounds and fighting styles. Challenge fight events were common, attracting experts in capoeira, boxing, judo (which was then synonymous with Jiu-Jitsu), and catch wrestling, all eager to learn jujutsu. This open environment, where fighters from different styles trained together, played a pivotal role in the development of jujutsu in Brazil.

Naturally, the presence of these fighters from various styles training together contributed to the evolution of a remarkably complete fighting style, which Helio Gracie skillfully employed in his own fights. Moreover, this collaborative atmosphere played a crucial role in the development of Helio Gracie’s training systems. By integrating and refining techniques from different disciplines, Helio Gracie crafted an approach that was highly effective and adaptable. In the picture, Carlson Gracie, who was considered one of Helio Gracie’s most talented students, perfectly combined a wide range of techniques. He skillfully integrated grappling, throwing, and striking during his fight against Waldemar Santana. At Valente Brothers, we honor and preserve these historical roots, continuously striving to improve ourselves and our students in this comprehensive fighting system.
