UPDATE: The Level 2 Snow Emergency has ended, effective as of 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2022.
PREVIOUSLY:
The City Administrator has declared a Level 2 Snow Emergency, effective as of 5:15 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. A Level 2 Snow Emergency advises against non-emergency travel in the City of Gillette. Citizens driving during a Level 2 Snow Emergency may encounter roads which are impassable; and will likely interfere with snow and storm damage removal as well as emergency services. All City facilities are closed for business during a Level 2 Snow Emergency. Although City facilities are closed, it is the responsibility of each citizen to determine whether their employer is open for business.
When the snow emergency is over, an announcement will be made by the City utilizing local media, the City website, and social media. Please monitor these sources for updated information.
Snow Emergency Declaration & Levels
The City of Gillette maintains two (2) levels of weather advisories for the City of Gillette, its citizens and visitors. In the event of a weather emergency, the City Administrator or his/her designee, will notify the public via social media, the City’s mass notification system, posting on the City website, and notice to the local media, of the nature and extent of the emergency.
LEVEL I: A Level I Weather Emergency does not restrict travel; however, citizens should expect adverse road conditions, including but not limited to, icy roads, reduced visibility, and blowing and drifting snow. A Level I Weather Emergency requires the removal of vehicles from all snow emergency routes in accordance with Section 11-10 of the Gillette City Code. All City facilities remain open for business during a Level I Weather Emergency.
LEVEL II: A Level II Weather Emergency advises against non-emergency travel in the City of Gillette. Citizens driving during a Level II Weather Emergency may encounter roads which are impassable; and will likely interfere with snow and storm damage removal as well as emergency services. All City facilities are closed for business during a Level II Weather Emergency. Although City facilities are closed, it is the responsibility of each citizen to determine whether their employer is open for business.

What do you do?
Mainly bookkeeping, but also all manner of office and business support. We help set up offices, reorganize, participate in the hiring process especially for office managers, and starting in 2021, we will be offering personal budget coaching.
What made you want to start your own business?
My top strength is building relationships. When I’ve worked for others, there were times when I was discouraged from making those connections. One supervisor told me, “You’re here to do a job, not build relationships.” At Kona, we aren’t just here to “do a job” for our clients. We build relationships to help make our clients more comfortable and confident in their team members and their work environment as well as their finances and office procedures.
How has 2020 changed you and the way you do business?
I’ve always been able to do remote work. If anything, it made others more aware of the technology and helped others catch up to what we already offered at Kona. My tiny business in Gillette, Wyoming can take care of other businesses across the U.S. using technology that others were less likely to use a year ago. I got an office in the FUEL Business Incubator and brought my yarn as I’m an avid knitter, but I don’t have much downtime to knit in the office.
What is your biggest goal for your business?
Our workload doubled by the end of 2020 and we would like it to triple in 2021. That’s a sustainable growth rate that would allow our contract workers to become full-time employees of Kona. Ideally, we’ll add our first full-time consultant and part-time Office Manager in 2021. I’m working on my Certified Professional Bookkeeper and April is working on her IRS enrolled agent certification.
Before starting your own business, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve had?
I worked at non-profit organizations. It taught me about services and support that’s available within a community. Habitat for Humanity in Casper was a great experience. When I lived in Oklahoma, I worked remotely providing tech support for Cingular Wireless for customers in Philadelphia and New York City. In high school, I worked in graphics and helped design a magazine. I’ve earned several national awards for photography. I helped run a snack bar and birthday parties at a mini-golf course. All these experiences have helped shape my understanding of the importance of hard work and building relationships with others.
What business in Gillette has had the most impact on you?
MaLinda Perry Consulting has helped me see my strengths. It was a powerful experience to identify my empathy, relationships, and empathy as strengths when previous supervisors counted them as weaknesses. Another strength is being a lifelong learner. I love podcasts, classwork, college, training, audio books, and reading. MaLinda’s programs and her influence helped me as Kona has grown over the past year.
What does Kona mean in Kona Consulting & Bookkeeping?
Kona is a trade wind in Hawaii. A few years ago, I had a dream of owning Four Winds Corporation. My husband and I opened our first business with a wind name. Then, Kona Consulting & Bookkeeping was launched. We’re already discussing our third business with a wind name. I’m more than halfway to literally owning the corporation of my dreams.
What’s is your favorite treat?
Anything sour. I also like the Keto Frappe at City Brew."
We are on the radio today discussing all that we have to offer.
