Drawn To Comics Origin Story

If you have read comics at anytime in your life you are familiar with the term “Origin Story”. If you have never been in a comic shop or even picked up a comic book you may not be familiar with the comic fan term but that is why we are here, to not only welcome the die-hard fan but to also open our arms to the first timers who are reading this article as well.

An Origin story is a how did this happen story? Where did it start? When did this start and most importantly why did it start? Well, it goes back over 34 years on the day that I am writing this, so grab some snack if needed, and a cozy chair and we can get started on the origin story of Drawn To Comics.

Drawn To Comics began in May of 2005 with co-founders Ken and Susan Brown deciding to take a great leap of faith and open up a small 500 square foot comic book shop in the heart of Downtown Glendale. A store with great customer service and an outstanding staff is now in its 13th year and still going strong. They have participated at multiple conventions and continue to make it a goal to get everyone in the community well simply put, Drawn To Comics.

The Origin starts with Ken who has been reading and collecting comics since 1983 when he was only 9 years old but it was not until 1984 when he 1st stumbled across the Black Costume Spider-man on the magazine rack of the nearby 7-11 that the life-long love for this industry spark was struck. Walking by the magazine rack after finishing his umpteenth game of Spy Hunter and sipping on a Blue Raspberry flavor Slurpee he took a look for the most recent issue of CarToons magazine. As he looked through the selection of magazines the cover of Amazing Spider-man #258 shined out like a bright light of a locomotive train charging through a tunnel in the young Ken’s eyes, it could not be missed. Ken, already a casual fan of Spider-man from watching Saturday Morning Episodes of Spider-man and His Amazing Friends just had to pick it up and see what the heck was going on with Peter Parker being pulled apart by these two drastically different costumes featured on its cover. As Ken read it he was shocked and amazed by this new black costume as it was dark and sleek and what he thought was a perfect match for what a Spider-man should look like! I mean really, How many blue and red spiders have you come across in your life time? This costume was awesome and it had to be purchased and read not just once, but just like the Spy Hunter game being played earlier, it had to b read umpteen times! Low and behold Ken was Drawn To Comics for the 1st time in his life and he could not get enough. He read in that issue that this was the last time Spider-man would wear the new living Symbiote Spider-man costume, Ken still has a strong dislike of Reed Richards for that revelation that scared the p**p out of Peter Parker. That revelation would lead Peter Parker to go back to the old red and blue threads that made no sense to a young Ken. “Why would you go back to that old boring red and blue suit?”, Ken asked himself. Ken quickly biked back to 7-11 within the next week with his $1.75 weekly allowance and skipped the slurpee and bought himself a Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-man #95 and Secret Wars #10, both with the Black Costume Spider-man still featured. It then became his quest to find all Spider-man Comics with the black costume.

One day, after getting his hair cut Ken and his Father were headed to the grocery store when he noticed the sign, “comic books on sale here,” in the front window of a small Book shop. Ken begged his Father to please stop and they did. What would happen next would change the path of a young Ken forever.

Ken, up to that point had only seen comics on sale on a Walden Books Store Mall Store spinner display, convenience store magazine rack or a drug store Hey Kids Comics display rack near his barber shop, but this was a whole back room area dedicated to comics. There were over 40 boxes of back issue older comics, there were over 100 new titles of comics, there were comic books pinned on walls and there were even protector supplies to keep comics nice and like new! Ken had no clue that comics were so collectible until that moment and he was in heaven! Ken immediately asked the shop keeper “Do you have any Black Costume Spider-man comic books?” and the shop keeper showed him all that he had including the 1st issue; that was #252 of Amazing Spider-man! I looked at it with a glow in my eye that could light up a city block, it was an amazing brown cover with Spider-man in that new black suit swinging across the city-scape with two teenagers under his arm and the quote “The rumors are true. Introducing the new Spider-man!” Ken, unfortunately noticed one other thing about the bagged comic book of his quest; the $4 price tag on what was originally a 60 cent comic book. Ken, experiencing his first case of sticker shock, asked the employee, why is this comic $4 when the cover has a printed price of 60 Cents? The Shop employee shared that is what it’s current value is due to its popularity in the market. Ken quickly asked, so he would not feel he was being taken advantage of and paying so much for this comic, “where do you find the market values?” The employee then showed Ken an Official Comic Book Price guide for the 1st time and the 2nd step to Drawn To Comics would be paved. “This is an Official Comic Book Price Guide it shows us the current market price of frequently sold comics in the comic shop world.” stated the employee. Ken, quickly asked, “Can I buy this Comic Book Price Guide too?” The employee responded, “Sure you can, it is in a pocket size for$3.95.” So with a little help from his Father I was able to pick up the Spider-man #252, Secret Wars #8 and my first Official Comic Book Priced Guide. With little surprise, trips to that comic store would be as frequent as Ken’s weekly allowance allowed it.

Ken read that price guide page for page and started to educate himself on what was a good purchase or not a good purchase for his money. The next step for Drawn To Comics was a comic that looked so cool that it didn’t matter that to this day is still worth less then a price guide value of $10. Alpha Flight #17 is the comic that would bring the next step to pave way to the opening of Drawn To Comics. It was amazingly Written and Drawn by Alpha Flight Creator John Byrne and this creator was like no other artist Ken had seen. His art was amazing to Ken! His action shots were exciting, his women were beautiful but strong, the men were muscular but not over-buffed. The characters facial expressions were organic not forced or plastic, this creator made comic book story telling impactful. The story was an aftermath reflection of the past deceased husband and former leader of Alpha Flight, named James MacDonald Hudson “Mac” & a hero named Guardian who’s death had caused great emotional stress for his widowed wife Heather Hudson. Family friend and former Alpha Flight & current X-Man Wolverine quickly rushed to her hospital bed side after hearing of her emotional collapse. This plot lead to the both of them reflecting back on a story of the X-Men and Guardian battling each other to bring the defected Wolverine back to the Canadian government program. First of all, Ken was shocked that how this Guardian who by himself almost defeated a team of super powered mutants called the X-Men but second that this character was dead! Ken never heard of a dead super hero before much less a killed off team leader! How could of this happened how do he find out? Of course, Ken needed to pay attention to the editor’s note box, that said see issue #12 and X-Men #109. Again, more back issues to hunt down for Ken. Creator John Byrne was one of the most high profile artist in the industry in the 1980s as his work on Alpha Flight, Fantastic Four and X-Men at Marvel Comics and his reintroduction of Superman at DC Comic changed the way Ken saw comic book story telling. John’s stories were risk taking and impactful. A nobody is safe storytelling technique that made almost every story he told a cant miss moment. Ken also learned that John Byrne also drew the Dark Phoenix Saga which quickly drew him into collecting back issue comics of X-Men, when he learned that the now also deceased Jean Grey was not Spider-man and Iceman’s close friend Firestar from the Spider-man and his Amazing Friends cartoon but a founding member of the X-Men possessed with one of the most powerful forces of the galaxy; Ken was intrigued. Yet another deceased character from a comic co-created by John Byrne that he had to read! Not only because it was by John Byrne, but the Phoenix had the same name as the city he was living in! How cool was that to the then 10 year old Ken!

Quickly, comic collecting was a way of life to Ken. He had monthly subscriptions to his favorite titles. Comics Value Monthly was a new magazine that started up in 1986 that followed the comic book market value trends he read on a monthly basis. His brain was a sponge to everything comic books until one day he had enough and thought it was his time to stop reading comic books forever. It was 1987 and Ken was in 8th grade and High School was seen as the time to grow up and the only thing left from his childhood way of life was his comic book collection. The only thing keeping his interest was the then cloth version of Spider-man’s black costume and that too was going away permanently in Amazing Spider-man #300. At that point in comic story telling, Peter Parker and Mary Jane had recently married, which represented a time of growth for Peter Parker. Ken’s fan favorite creator John Byrne had been long gone off of Alpha Flight and Superman editors had just released him from the series due to his taking the character to new heights not reached or rather not to be reached by the innovative story teller. The writing was on the wall. Ken’s comic collecting chapter was coming to an end as he was no longer finding himself drawn to comics.
