Sandi’s poor chicken is nameless. We keep walking past the chicken and just say, “Good morning, Chicken”. Chicken needs a name and we need your help. During the yarn crawl we are having a Name the Chicken contest, so put on your thinking caps and come up with a name for Chicken. There is a prize from Chicken for giving her a name.

Behind Chicken is a sweater that Melissa knit and put together in a kit for the yarn crawl. Don’t be disappointed…quanities are limited.

Seven yarn stores in the area are involved. Visit all shops and be eligible for $175 in gift certificates; plus, each shop will have their own unique offerings and presentations. We will be offering a variety of kits, including those created by Pam Powers as shown here. With the variety of kits we have, we should have a kit to interest everyone; but remember, the kits are in limited quantities.

More and more young people are becoming interested in knitting and crocheting. It is heart warming to see younger generations are interested in these activities. It means the skills will continue to survive. We find more young people are coming into the shop to buy yarn and are coming to our Open Knit/Crochet Night. This young woman’s story, featured in People magazine, caught my eye.

A Boston teenager is going viral after crocheting her own floor-length prom dress for just $60. An avid crocheter, Sarah Akinbuwa was determined to make her own dress. So, she did. Her pink, strapless floor-length gown — complete with crocheted roses on the lower half, a matching crocheted floor-length shrug and a crocheted handbag— took her just three days to design and to complete.

The inspiration behind the look was a pink strapless gown designed by Valentino Haute Couture and worn by Zendaya at the 2023 SAG Awards. After graduation Sarah plans to pursue a career in fashion design.

All good things must come to an end. The Grafton Yarn Store Summer Yarn Sale is coming to an end Saturday at 4:00. What feels better than wrapping yourself up in a cozy Lopi Blanket?? Okay, I know, it’s HOT out there; but in 6 months we will be looking to curl up with our knitting, crocheting, or a good book and a nice cozy wool blanket.

We are pleased to be accepting preorders until the end of June for PREMADE Lopi Blankets. The blankets come in various patterns and color combinations. Stop by the shop to see the multiple choices you have. They are popular because of their warmth and lightness. The blankets retail for $240 but if preordered, the cost is $199.

I apologize about how to find the pattern on Ravelry for yesterday’s pattern. It should be Riptide 135, not Riptide 1-3-5.

The Riptide 1-3-5 pattern, pictured here, gets its numerical name from the number of skeins of the brand of yarn the designer used to produce the different scarf and shawl options, and sizes available in the pattern.
1 skein —- produces the narrow scarf
3 skeins — medium asymmetrical shawl option
5 skeins — large asymmetrical shawl option

I am making the narrow scarf using Berroco Remix Light. Remix Light is a soft, comfortable blend of nylon, cotton, acrylic, silk and linen. A tweedy, rustic look makes this yarn an ideal candidate for casual knits, and its machine washability means any garment will be low maintenance and hard-wearing. Remix Light knits to a DK weight gauge and contains an incredible 432 yards per 100g ball. Finished garments are immediately cozy, with the feeling of well-loved jeans or your favorite old tee-shirt.

Other yarns that could be used are The Fibre Co. & Make or Berroco Pima Soft.

Due to the showery forecast, we've moved our activities into the shop. We're offering instant knitting and crochet lessons, so bring along a friend who has been curious about the magic you create with your hooks and needles. Need help getting a project out of the time-out basket? Let's take a look! Come, sit a bit, and share your joy of fiber with fellow enthusiasts.

How are you greening your knitting and crocheting?

Less crocheting or knitting doesn’t seem like much fun. Reusing a yarn generally means you’ve had to rip out a failed project… a painful part of any knitting or crocheting process.

Enter Remix Light, a 100% recycled Berroco yarn made using a low-impact manufacturing process patented in France. Remix was the result of over a year of collaborative work between mill and textile engineers.

The cropped FRAGARIA TEE can be quickly knit with just a few balls of BERROCO REMIX LIGHT. The body is knit in the round with a mesh panel at the sides that carries up and over to form the
yoke.

Can’t figure out what to knit with that single skein of sock yarn in a variegated colorway that you’ve had in your stash for months? Here’s the answer! The REYNA SHAWL, a free pattern on Ravelry.

This pattern was specifically designed to work with the variegation of colors, instead of having to deal with numerous color changes. One skein of fi*****ng weight yarn is enough to complete a shawl, and the pattern is easy to modify to compensate for slight variations in yardage.

The Joni Tee is the perfect summer knit. There’s enough soothing stockinette to let your mind wander; but the lovely details, the lace panel and the rounded hem, ensure a fun and engaging knitting journey. There are so many colors to pick from in the Zooey yarn color palette.

It’s playful and stylish, and easy to dress up or down. It will look just as good with tattered old jeans as with a summer skirt, and take you from day to night all summer long.

Becky, one of our Thursday night knitters/crocheters, just completed this beautiful Starflake Shawl designed by Stephen West. Two colors of fi*****ng weight yarn create a collage of graphic shapes for this top-down shawl. The pattern is available on Ravelry along with 4159 projects for you to look at. What a beautiful addition to Becky’s wardrobe.

Welcome To The World Of Wonderland!

This week we welcomed, unpacked, and set up a trunk show of lovely garments made from Wonderland Yarns. Wonderland offers yarns that are beautiful in the colors offered and unique in the names chosen for the yarns since all of the yarns are named for something related to Alice in Wonderland.

In the picture two yarns have come together to create gradient magic in the Cascading Colors Shawl! This simple-to-knit, top-down triangle shawl let’s the yarn do all the work to create a cascade of color. Switching between the tonal yarn and color-morphing cake, colors shift hues or saturation as you knit to create a striking shawl.

INTRODUCING TILLIE

It is a super bulky yarn made up of 92% wool and 8% nylon. The cowl shown here is called Summit. You knit until you come to a splash of color and then you use the colored area to make a bobble. The scarf is a crocheted pattern called Zurie. You continue crocheting the scarf in the crochet stitch called for and let the color show off itself.

I was reminded the other day of a way to help you decide how to chose colors for your color work project. Take a picture of your yarn choices using the black and white filter to check the contrast. The following post will show you the black and white picture of the yarns shown here since I can only post 1 picture at a time.

This is applying the black and white filter to the yarn choices in the last post (I can only post one picture at a time). For each trio of yarns pictured here you want to chose two motif shades in each trio that stand out against the background color.

In the afternoon they will be doing a presentation relating to different yarns and colors. After the presentation we will be hosting a reception. We are introducing our newest yarn, Stitch Stuff Yarn. The yarn is hand-dyed by a mother-daughter team located in Wauwatosa who specialize in dying small batches of happy colored yarns that will delight all yarn lovers.

We are excited that Holly and Erin will be with us all day on the 10th to share their story and yarn with us. At 2:00 they will do a presentation on mohair, suri, and combining yarns and colors. The presentation will be followed by catered appetizers.
