The Globe GC-1 Swift, also known as the Globe/Temco Swift, is a light, two-seat sport monoplane from the post-World War II period. Here are some key details about the Globe GC-1 Swift:
- The Globe GC-1 Swift was designed by R.S. "Pop" Johnson in 1940 and was financially secured by John Kennedy, president of the Globe Medicine Company, to be built by his new Globe Aircraft Company.
- The GC-1 Swift featured an all-metal construction, sleek lines, and retractable landing gear, making it an economical civilian counterpart to the fighter aircraft of World War II.
- The initial model, GC-1A, had an 85 horsepower (63 kW) engine and received its type certificate on May 7, 1946. Globe built approximately 408 GC-1A Swifts.
- Later, the GC-1 Swift received a more powerful engine of 125 horsepower (93 kW), becoming the GC-1B model. Globe, together with TEMCO (Texas Engineering and Manufacturing Company), built 833 GC-1B Swifts in six months.
- The GC-1B Swift was known for its handling and performance, with some likening it to a smaller version of the US Army Air Force's P-40 fighter of the early 1940s.
- The Globe GC-1 Swift played a significant role in the advancement of post-war sport aviation and is appreciated for its design, performance, and historical significance.
