“I grew up watching and being infatuated with Cesar (de la Cruz) and Jade. Cesar was around the house a little bit growing up, and I always thought he was so flashy, rode pretty horses, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever when he would pull back on two feet. He’d also go out of his way to shake my hand and make me feel like a buddy. It’s been really cool to me that in the last couple years, Cesar and I have mounted each other out on horses at some rodeos. That seems surreal to me.

If there are kids that look up to me now, I always remember how Cesar made me feel. He’d let me follow him around, check out his tack room and swing his ropes and stuff. Now, parents come up and ask if their kid is bothering me, and they’re not, because I’m sure I wore a couple guys out asking questions back then.“

"Some of the best guys—𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐚, 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐫 and 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐬—they like a lot of 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠. But for me, I like it with just a little bit of backswing. I lose legs if the rope starts to 𝐤𝐢𝐜𝐤 (the opposite of backswing) too much because my loop isn’t closing for me. At the ropings and rodeos, if I have a rope that has just a little bit of backswing, that’s what I pick to use. After about three or four runs, if I feel the rope start to kick, I go to the trailer to get a newer rope."

Denton Dunning has been on a tear this year... well deserved recognition!

𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐑𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫,

As we were planning this issue, I heard one of the best guys in the world theorizing on retirement. He asked what I thought made guys with all the talent in the world step away from rodeo, go home, get a job or just “do something different.”

A long time ago in 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘯 𝘛𝘰 𝘞𝘪𝘯 𝘙𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘰, we used to write ‘retirement’ stories. But after countless “Just kidding, I’m not really retiring” re-writes, when guys decided to get back on the road after only a few months or few years at home, we gave that up. Even guys like Jake Barnes and Clay O’Brien Cooper had been semi-retired before they made comebacks that looked a lot like world title runs.

Regardless, at about this point in every rodeo season, I hear guys thinking they’re done with rodeo...

Sitting just outside the top 25 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings coming into the week, Mitchell knows he has work to do if he wants to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December.

He and partner Lightning Aguilera finally got the momentum shifting results they have been chasing.

The duo capped off a wildly successful week with a big win at the Days of '76 Rodeo in Deadwood, S.D., placing second in each round and winning the average title for a $7,097 payday.
