In last night’s game, Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion, displaying what’s known as a fencer’s posture. While this is a clear and serious sign of head trauma, many concussions aren’t so obvious. A simple “ding” or mild headache could lead to more serious symptoms later on.

What is fencer’s posture?
Fencer’s posture occurs when the brain’s motor control is disrupted after a significant head injury. The athlete may extend their arms and legs rigidly, resembling a fencer’s stance. This can indicate severe brain trauma, but not all head injuries present in such a visible way.

Head injuries aren’t always clear.
Concussions can vary in their symptoms, including:
-Cognitive impairments like memory loss and difficulty concentrating.
-Emotional changes, like increased anxiety and depression.
-Physical symptoms, like persistent headaches and balance issues.

Speak up and seek help.
If you or someone you know experiences any signs of a head injury—even if they seem mild—don’t wait. Here’s what to do:
1. Get checked: Always seek medical evaluation after a head injury, even for minor symptoms.
2. Consider physical therapy: It can assist in your recovery, managing symptoms like dizziness, balance issues and more.
3. Take rest seriously: Ensure proper rest and follow medical advice to avoid worsening the injury.

Don’t stay silent about a head injury. Early treatment can prevent long-term consequences. Speak up, get help and prioritize your health.

It's still hot out there! Even temperatures in the 80s can be dangerous if kids write it off as being "not that hot" and then fail to drink enough water throughout the day. Our athletic trainers are making sure student-athletes stay hydrated and cool under those Friday night lights.

After a dog bite led to the partial amputation of her right index finger, Latisha Perez needed physical therapy to desensitize and mobilize her finger.

Initially, she attended two sessions at another facility, but a friend recommended the Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation Outpatient Therapy – Plano Alliance center.

When she arrived at Plano Alliance, Latisha met her physical therapist Tiffany Miller, OTR, CHT. Latisha wanted to reduce her pain and improve functionality, and Tiffany designed a treatment plan for Latisha with her goals in mind.

“Tiffany has provided exceptional care with compassion and professionalism during this difficult time,” she said.

Latisha also shared that the therapy sessions are thorough and consistently enhance her mobility. She regained both her confidence and functionality, exceeding her expectations.

At our Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation Dallas Day Neuro Program, we believe in rebuilding life skills.

Recently, occupational therapist Jenna McDaniel realized she had three patients on her team that wanted to get back to golfing. To foster community reintegration and participation in recreational activities, she organized a local golf range outing to address their goals for coordination, visual perception, and reaction time. John Bannister, one of Day Neuro’s rehabilitation techs (and golfer himself) helped to implement recommendations and encourage patients to get back into their leisure activities safely and effectively. Way to go, everyone!

Jordan White was a patient at our Cedar Park East center in Austin from 2018 to 2023, where he received care from physical therapist Brittany Chesser following multiple surgeries on his right leg.

Born with his right leg shorter than his left, Jordan has undergone 20 operations, including ongoing leg-lengthening procedures that required post-operative physical therapy. Over the years, Brittany has witnessed Jordan's perseverance and determination as he overcame many obstacles, emerging stronger after each surgery.

Now, at 15 years old, Jordan is set to represent the United States in Paris at the end of August as the youngest-ever US Paralympic archer, competing as one of six members of the United States Paralympic Archery team. Kimberly Elvington has been living with knee pain for 20 years after she fell and shattered her kneecap. She underwent surgery several times and put off a knee replacement as long as she could until, eventually, she couldn't wait any longer.

Kimberly chose our McKinney - Red Bud center, working with physical therapist James Venhuizen for both prehab and post-operative therapy. "We really connected," Kimberly said. "He cares about what he's doing for you. He wants you to get healthy. He's compassionate."

Just one week after her surgery, Kimberly could already walk straight and put weight on her new knee. She attributes these milestones to the work she and James put in before and after her surgery. "I'm getting better every day," she said. "I've done a lot of physical therapy in the past and it's never been as good as this has been."

Now, Kimberly is excited to help her granddaughter ride a bike and keep up with her energetic six-year-old grandson. Congratulations, Kimberly!

Alan Armentrout had a spinal cord herniation through the dura mater requiring surgery. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves running down your back, protected by a tough covering called the dura mater. If part of the spinal cord pushes through this covering, it's called spinal cord herniation.

In Alan’s case, the surgery resulted in loss of use of his lower extremities. He was recommended to Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation - Outpatient Therapy in Grapevine to help him regain his mobility and independence. He shared these words about his experience:

“Everything is upbeat and positive here. It is open, doesn't feel crowded, and I hear joy amongst everybody when I am here. I don't hear despair and I have never heard a therapist give a negative to anybody.

I think I have the most wonderful therapist in the world - highly recommended: [physical therapist] Shantha Nithiananda. She is always challenging me, she is upbeat, encouraging, and well-prepared. When I leave at the end of the day, I know that she has pushed me to my limits so I can see change and growth each time I come.

[Therapy aide] Addyson Trammell is delight to be around. She is always willing to help. Positive and encouraging.

I have good instructions, my therapist[s] explain the biomechanics of what I am doing so that I can understanding what I am working on and how to do it. I get lots of time to practice, and the clinic has the equipment I need. It's just been a positive experience with energetic therapists who are keeping me moving forward towards my goal.

The most important goal I have is to walk independently. I have not reached it - but I am gaining ground every week.”

Way to go, Alan!

Betty Sims was referred to Baylor Scott & White Institute of Rehabilitation Outpatient Therapy by her rheumatologist. Betty chose our Carrollton Sandy Lake center, where she wanted to improve her core stabilization, functional movement, strength, posture and range of motion.

Here’s what Betty had to say about her experience:

“Shout out to the best physical therapist Brandon Galloway! [He] was extremely knowledgeable, caring and focused on ensuring that each exercise in the treatment plan targeted the muscles needed to meet my individualized goals. He would demonstrate the exercise, ensure that I understood how to perform the exercises safely and effectively. The exercises progressed as I gained more strength. Each session started with a short warm up. Brandon then provided interesting, creative, and individualized exercises specifically designed to increase functional movements, improve muscle strength, core stabilization, balance and coordinated mobility.

Initially, I was skeptical that I would be able to see improvement in the allocated weeks that were estimated for treatment. Within two sessions, I started seeing improvement. To my delight, I exceeded my goals and accomplished more than I thought would be possible. I returned to a riding 2-wheel bike along with a home exercise program to continue my core strengthening.

[Patient service specialist] Christine Eastman is the receptionist [and] is courteous and friendly. She greets everyone with a smile and goes out of her way to make sure guests are comfortable. The center is well equipped, bright with natur[al] light and clean. All of the staff are exceptional. If you are serious about improving your health, this is the place to go!”

Wishing you good health always, Betty! Get back to what you love by calling us at 888.722.9567 or go to https://bit.ly/3L4u8Yl.
