The Hall County Historical Society is making a documentary on a local Grand Island businessman, David Kaufman who helped save Jews from Germany during WWII, we are honored to be part of recreating a piece of Grand Island’s history.
Details below:
Documentary Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ip5BY1IPPY8
Description:
Grand Island businessman and community leader, David Kaufmann, believed one person could make a difference in the lives of others.
Born in Bad Münstereifel, Germany in 1875, David emigrated to the United States in 1903 and settled in Grand Island, Nebraska and built a remarkable business empire. As a “quiet philanthropist” David did what he could, from where he was, to benefit others in his community and beyond. Kaufmann not only gave of himself; he inspired others through his words and actions to also do good where they could. Although he was recognized in the Grand Island community for the work he did locally, he never sought recognition for himself.
The greatest impact however was likely his least known role in sponsoring Jewish families who were fleeing from the horrors of the N**i regime leading up to World War II. Kaufmann never spoke publicly about this important humanitarian work during his lifetime. However, the families who were saved due to his actions taken in Grand Island, Nebraska never forgot what he had done for them and the generations that followed.
With so many of the generation who lived through World War II and the atrocities committed by the N**i regime fading away, it is critical that we ensure the stories about this dark part of our history are not forgotten.
The Hall County Historical Society partnered with the Institute for Holocaust Education, an agency of the Jewish Federation of Omaha, to tell this inspiring true story. With our professional production team from Chimney Rock Media, we have interviewed descendants of individuals brought to the United States by Kaufmann, historians, community leaders, and individuals who remembered David Kaufmann. Reenacted scenes for the documentary were filmed in Grand Island, Nebraska with local talent and supported by multiple individuals and organizations from the area.
This project has also received financial and in-kind support from organizations across the state including History Nebraska, Humanities Nebraska, Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation, Nebraska Jewish Historical Society, Stuhr Museum, Buffalo County Historical Society, and University of Nebraska-Kearney.
A Life Well Lived: An Account of David Kaufmann will premiere on August 4, 2024, at the Grand Theatre in Grand Island, previously owned by David Kaufmann.
