It is Movember! A month dedicated to raising awareness for men's health issues like mental health, su***de prevention, prostate, and testicular cancer. Western States Fire Protection proudly supports this cause, advocating for men's well-being. 💪
Why does Movember matter? Men's mental health often goes unnoticed. Su***de rates are alarmingly high especially in the construction and life safety industry, and Movember aims to break the stigma and encourage open conversations. It also sheds light on prostate and testicular cancer, stressing the importance of early detection for better outcomes.
How can you help? Spread the word, grow a mo, or donate to support vital research and initiatives. Join us in making a difference!

It is Pinktober! Every year during October, we come together to observe those who have passed, are actively fighting, or have survived a breast cancer diagnosis. Many of us either have a loved one who has been diagnosed, or are somebody who has been affected. It is an issue that affects millions of families and communities around the world.
Our Statewide Fire branch in Las Vegas has been raising money for a few months now for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), and they are looking to ramp up these donations in October. We ask that if you are able, please use the link below to donate to the cause.
We thank you for every dollar donated, and together, we can find a cure!

On Saturday, our Armor Fire office teamed up with United Caring Services to provide hot, delicious meals to almost 100 homeless individuals in Evansville, Indiana. The mark of a great company is not about the money it makes, but about the impact it has on the community. We are immensely proud of the Armor team! 👏
Our last fact for Su***de Prevention Week is the most important one. There are several signs that an individual could be a potential harm to themselves and it is imperative that we know what they are. If you know someone who is exhibiting these signs, an intervention may be needed.
If you are unsure how to approach an individual would could be suicidal there are several great resources online to help guide you through that interaction like this five-step plan from the National Institute of Mental Health: https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/5-action-steps-for-helping-someone-in-emotional-pain
Additionally, if someone is an immediate harm to themselves you can call the Su***de and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988.
Together, we can take the necessary steps to stop su***des.
Part of su***de prevention is understanding why an individual may consider su***de. Of course, every person is different and there are multiple factors at play, but understanding “the why” will help us to be more empathetic when dealing with su***de prevention.
The most dangerous thing facing construction workers is not falling, being struck by an object, being caught by/in between something, or even electrocutions. The most present danger for construction workers is su***de, as there are over five times as many su***des in the construction industry as there are work-related fatalities.
WSFP is looking to change safety culture industry-wide, and changing safety culture also means changing our views on mental health. There are people in our offices every day who are in a dark place and need someone to shine a light.
“Achieving Zero,” as we say can only be done if we also achieve zero su***des.
For more information on the statistics, see here: https://blogs.cdc.gov/niosh-science-blog/2020/09/09/su***de-in-construction/
With this week being Su***de Prevention Week, we wish to educate our audience on su***de within the construction industry. People in construction and construction-related industries experience significantly higher rates of suicidality and mental health issues.
Through education, we hope to not only lower these rates within WSFP, but for the construction/trade industries as a whole. These are more than just numbers…. they are fathers, mothers, spouses, kids, friends, co-workers, etc.
Together we can change the culture surrounding su***de and mental health.🤝
🇺🇸 Remembering 9/11 🇺🇸
Today, we pause to honor the memory of the innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001. We will never forget the profound impact it had on our nation.
We also pay tribute to the incredible bravery of the firefighters, first responders, and all those who risked their lives to save others in the aftermath of the Twin Towers' collapse. They ran towards danger when others were running away, demonstrating the true meaning of heroism.
May we never forget the unity that emerged from tragedy, the strength of the human spirit, and the resilience of a nation that came together in the face of adversity.
Let's take a moment to reflect, remember, and honor the memory of those who are no longer with us. 🙏❤️
September is Su***de Awareness and Prevention Month, and we have an important safety message for all…
In 2020, the CDC highlighted a sobering statistic: men working in construction face one of the highest su***de rates compared to other industries. Their su***de rate is approximately four times higher than the general population. That same year, the CDC reported that 40% of U.S. adults struggled with mental health or substance use issues in 2020, with 11% seriously considering su***de.
The construction industry's su***de rate is a pressing concern. It was documented by the U.S. Department of Labor that the su***de rate for men in construction occupations was 49.4 per 100,000, which is five times greater than the rate for all fatal work-related injuries in the construction industry (9.5 per 100,000). Multiple national construction agencies have launched campaigns with valuable resources and training to address the issue which can be found below.
Let's join hands and take action to address this critical issue within the construction industry. For those within the APi Group umbrella, we also have a slew of internal resources at your disposal. If you or someone you know would benefit from these resources, please reach out to someone on your HR team.
Lastly, always remember to check up on your people because you never know what they are facing. Together, we can save lives.
