The old inaccurate model of thinking your back “pops out of joint” has never been accurate. Facet dislocations are rare and typically a medical emergency. Even the discoverer of chiropractic DD Palmer coined the term “subluxation” which is defined as less than a dislocation. Small deep stabilizer muscles are what cause misalignment, not dislocation.

Why does it matter? Patients’ understanding matters. When you think your back or neck is dislocated and needs to be popped back in, how many visits should that take? One. And if the patient isn’t better symptomatically after one, then you suck or are trying to scam them into extra treatments. Virtually every week I will hear someone say they tried chiropractic and it didn’t work. I follow up with asking, “ how many times did you go?” Answer is 98% of time “once”.

Because the treatments are to the muscles, a muscle model is more accurate. Can I go to the gym once and come out fit and thin? No. Muscles take time and frequency to change. Some patients do feel better after one treatment, however that does not mean the underlying muscle disorder has been corrected, and the problem will likely recur. Especially in chronic cases.
