New Day, new bedroom for a happy ten year old.
You know how when you hit the double digits...princesses, unicorns and lavendar are just too juvenile. You've matured beyond those nonsensical things and you need gold accents and fairy lights in your life now. Ngl, I'm low key trying to see if I can swing a canopy bed with fairy lights in my own room. I'm in the double digits too and it just feels right.
I don't ever care about celebrities at all, but for some reason I've always kinda cared about Christina and Tarek. announced this for "early 2025" so if anyone needs me in early 2025 sry I'm busy.
Even though I could see my breath and was wrapped up in a giant blanket like a human taco for survival at my kids' outdoor games yesterday, spring is officially here. I took down my front porch Christmas decor an embarrassingly short time ago, but let's not dwell on the past and instead focus on this New Day room glow up (swipe for before) .
This client got new carpet and then a new couch, so she was in the mood to really shake things up with a new look. We went back and forth about keeping the green, but ultimately went with Alabaster on the walls to really give cozy and neutral feels. We curated the wall decor mostly at . Y'all know how I feel about a good wall decor moment like this. I love little collections, big gallery walls, the perfect single piece, keeping a theme or mixing shapes and sizes. The right and wrong wall decor will be a huge factor in how your home presents and how it makes people feel. It's worth a little tlc.
I think we all deserve a trophy for making it through the Monday after Daylight Savings. None of us are going to get one so maybe treat yourself to a cocktail or a pedicure. Or just a scoop of ice cream, maybe a cup of hot tea. Tacos. A bath. A shower if the bathtub is dirty. Whatever you can do, you've earned it. Personally, I got out of bed around 7:40 this morning to get my kids ready for the bus and it felt like the middle of the night (I know I have it good with 7:40). The sun is setting as I write this post, and we did it.
I'm not trying to brag but I did some stuff today too. I even put on a blazer and it warranted a selfie. I toured this cool show room for designers that's new to GR. I met a couple of potential clients, one of them being a snazzy gal who wants to paint her bedroom pink (inspo pic attached, my kinda lady. The inspo pic is an actual magazine page because she's of the generation that still does magazines).
When I got home I started prying shoe molding off my wall because I have a whole pallet of new flooring for my main floor that's just waiting on me to remove this trim before it starts going down. I did exactly one wall and decided enough was enough. It's a hard day, what do I think I'm doing anyways. Then I laid in my bed and ate a cheese stick and some kit kats for my girl dinner. Thanks for listening.
You probably won't have to feel this decrepit or confused until next year when this day happens.βοΈ
Can we take a moment to appreciate how much more fun kitchens were in the 1950's?
I went on a museum field trip with my daughter's class and saw this little gem in their "American homes throughout the decades" exhibit.
It got me thinking that the problems in America today probably started when we did away with pink refrigerators. I'm no expert, but I'm also pretty sure I'm right. We have revived butterfly clips and bib overalls. My kids have tamagotchi pets and pre-teens are buying record players. Why are we still out here with shiny kitchen appliances that hold fingerprints like a criminal database. I just want to know when pastel appliances will have their moment again, that's all. Enjoy your week.
A fuunnnn project this week π©΅ππ©΅
This client and I have been working together for months to perfect the vision for this room. I painted it, then we decided the color wasn't exactly what we had in mind so immediately repainted it after tweaking the color twice, then I applied the wallpaper to the ceiling (an extra dramatic statement with the vault but this was the perfect room for it), then I switched out the old school ceiling fan for an updated fan/light combo that coordinates with her lighting throughout the rest of the home. It's a whole mood and I'm obsessed. I have a soft spot for jewel tones. I have a soft spot for a lot of tones but this dark teal...this dark teal is it. I can't wait to get the furniture added and put the finishing touches in here.
We were on a family vacation last week that was amazing, but there's nothing like a vacation to make you want another vacation, am I right? Unfortunately that's not the way it works, so this was a fun project to jump back into reality with.
Here's your Monday reminder that a coat of paint can change your life.
Am I being dramatic? Yes. Drama is my specialty (the good kind, not the Kanye West kind). Does the point stand regardless? Also yes.
This client likes a modern, clean aesthetic. That's not going to happen with a cherry wood banister. We're working on revamping her whole main floor, but the staircase transformation is a statement of its own. The house was built in the early 2000's when red tones were really having a moment (think brown and red and strange circle/geometric patterns--now stop thinking because it was awful). We looked into replacing it, but ultimately the details weren't the problem, just the color. Alas, paint for the win once again. Bonus: More room in the budget for other fun stuff.
Hope everyone is having a great first normal week of 2024. The kids are back in school, the adults are back to the office. The Christmas decor is coming down and the outside trash bins are no longer exploding wrapping paper and toy packages onto your driveway and curb every time the wind blows. You're looking around your house now that the tree and piney greenery are down and thinking about how boring and empty it looks. It's okay, I'm here for you. 616.240.9292.
I like fresh starts. (Hence the name..."New Day" Interiors.)
I wanted to incorporate the idea of starting fresh in my business name, because my goal is to help you do that.
It's also a nod to my favorite verse (above).
New weeks, new months, new mornings, new beginnings, new goals, and of course, new years. I love the natural reset that comes along with them.
2024 brings with it some new changes for myself and New Day Interiors. Many of you know that in addition to hustling with my business, I've also maintained a part time "day job". I've decided to step away from that, which means I can put all of my focus here.
I've been so fortunate since first starting that so many of you have trusted me with your home. I've been able to keep busy thanks mostly to word of mouth referrals, so keep them coming! I'll now have the capacity to take on larger projects. I'm working on some New Year specials, but please reach out if you have a project in mind. If you simply need walls painted, several rooms redesigned, or something in between, I'd be happy to chat with you!

I don't know who needs to hear this but
Europe sounds nice but this sounds better
Thanksgiving didn't go as planned for us this year.
We were supposed to host our family, but instead ended up with one case of hand foot & mouth, a couple fevers and a stomach bug in our house. We ate alone (leftovers my MIL graciously dropped off), my kids whined about how it was the worst Thanksgiving ever, and I lectured them on how it was all their fault because they're gross.
The upside was that I had a few consecutive days at home to focus on Christmas decorating.
I did two trees in the living room and I feel like it's exactly the magic I had hoped for. Fueled by dopamine and Pinterest, I got up early on black Friday and deserted my afflicted family to go buy some new ornaments and coordinate my trees. I drank a peppermint mocha and listened to MC while I decorated and didn't let my children touch anything I was doing. (There's 4 other trees in the house. They didn't suffer.)
Next year I'm imagining multiple trees on each side of the fireplace. Varying sizes, a majestic indoor Christmas forest if you will. Someone stop me.
Inexpensive Christmas decor hack π: Go to that pile of Amazon boxes in your garage (the ones waiting for a burst of motivation from your husband) and pick out a few smaller, not destroyed ones. Grab a couple fancy rolls of wrapping paper and some ribbony, sparkly, ornamenty stuff (I got all this for 50% off at ) and go to town wrapping them. Make sure you drink a holiday drink from Starbucks and listen to Christmas music while you do it . They make a nice added touch for under your tree, the sides of your fireplace, that weird lower shelf of your entryway console table...
If you're one of those people who starts shopping for Christmas on December 26th the year prior, then that's nice for you. You can wrap actual presents. The rest of us will wrap empty trash pile boxes. My actual presents I frantically acquire the week before Christmas and wrap them with dollar store paper at 11pm on Christmas Eve. Fake presents are my moment.
Shook this kitchen up with fancy blue backsplash tile from (installed by yours truly), which took this room up a notch or ten. The quartz counter upgrade doesn't hurt either.
A new backsplash is a relatively low cost way to make a huge impact on your kitchen (and subsequently your house). It's icing on your house cake. It's where and how you can tie all the colors and styles together. If you're looking for a change in your kitchen but aren't ready to pull a big trigger, let's head to the tile store and get inspired. If you have no interest in re-tiling, you will by the time we leave the tile store. π€π€π€
A saga about my fall decorations:
I want nothing more than to put my fall decorations up. My fall attitude is B.A.S.I.C. and I do not care. I am here for all of the thankful-grateful decor, all of the seasonal coffee and flannel shirts and mums and pumpkin something candles. When I start to feel that autumn crisp in the air, it lights a fire in my soul. I come alive.
I know we have a few more days before it's even official, but I feel behind. I'm panicking. I love September to Christmas. Starting in January I hate winter--the magic is over and I'm tired until April, but that's a conversation for another day.
Last week was busy with work and life. The weekend got away from me. Now I'm sick, the kind of sick where you can't push through to put up your fall decorations even when you're home all day and it's heavy on your heart. My heart, it's screaming, "get out the fall totes you monster," but my body is screaming, "just lay here and admire fall decor on Pinterest because you actually can't move."
So the most fall-ish thing I've done so far this season is roast this butternut squash. So that's what you get a picture of. I got the pumpkin sauce from Aldi and some tortellini, some goat cheese and some apple maple (veggie) sausage and had big dreams...but then I got sick and the insides of this squash are still in a ziplock bag inside of my fridge and will probably go from there to the trash by the time I get it together.
Fall is short and I don't have time for this.
βNew Day playroom glow upβ
The best kind of playroom is the one your kids actually want to play in, amirite?
If you are fortunate enough to have a designated space for a playroom/play area, these are some of my tips:
1. Choose a room that's close to the main area of the house if you can. Young kids typically aren't going to want to hang out in a corner of the basement away from the rest of the action in your home.
2. Leave some empty floor space to foster imaginative play.
3. Pare down the toys. Rotate them if you can't decide what to keep. Kids get overwhelmed with too much stuff, just like everyone else in the world except clinical hoarders. Make it easy to keep clean/pick up.
4. Add some comfy seating. This gray couch is a $100 marketplace find. If you have a playroom but your kids still drag their toys into the living room all the time, try making the playroom feel more like a living room.
5. Have fun with it. This is a safe place to use some bolder colors and designs if you want, even if it's not typically your style. Just don't overstep the line between fun and ugly. You might think your kids want bright purple walls and a glitter ceiling, they might tell you they want this, but please remember we're not trying to give the kids a stroke here.

I remember the first time I put up wallpaper (peel & stick), it took me like over 11 hours to do one simple wall. I'm pretty handy if I haven't mentioned that, so I began with unwarranted confidence because how hard could this be. I'm good at this stuff.
Suffice it to say, I wasn't prepared for the emotional investment of this wall. By the end of the day I was dripping with sweat, cursing the version of myself that thought this was a reasonable idea, and I still wasn't done because I hadn't appropriately accounted for pattern repeat waste and ran out of paper.
Despite all this tragedy, I was obsessed with the final result. I also can't let myself be bad at things like that, so I did it again and again and again until I was good.
Today I did this wall, it didn't take me 11 hours, and I didn't run out of paper.
The moral of the story is that if you are thinking of hanging peel & stick for the first time, you will not be good. You don't need to be like me with that first wall, you don't have to do that to yourself.
You can just call me. π

My Saturday π
Shelves are a great place for pretty things, and pretty things make pretty homes. I like pretty homes, so I like shelves. There's nothing like a collection of full shelves to take the "lobby of a financial institution" vibes out of your boring living room, and add some personality.
You know what's better than shelves?
My shelves.
I will fill up any cart with shelfy items any day of the week. I'll arrange them on your shelf, stand back and stare at them for awhile from different angles. Purposely look away, take some sips of my ever-present latte. Look back, see where my eyes land. Make sure the colors and the sizes and shapes are giving me good feels. The next time I come over I might change a few shelf things 'cause I laid awake at night thinking about your shelves. No one will love your shelves the way I do.
Have an amazing weekend.βοΈ
Amazing as all of my shelves.
Nothing like a successful home shopping trip. Nothing.
At Home is my second favorite store and I can't wait to get to work with these pieces later this week. *dramatically rubs hands together up and down to signal my eagerness*
For myself, I'm picking up those thrifted chairs tomorrow from the plainfield store and I'm dying over them. I already had perfectly good chairs for my living room, but a fellow design & thrift ju**ie family member sent me these today and I realized practicality will just have to go to the wayside here. I get a leopard print dopamine hit and the unnecessary money spent goes to the Lord's work. That's a win-win if I ever heard one.
It's been a crazy summer and I haven't posted much. Our basement flooded, my transmission went out, and I've been painting the town (literally). That's the condensed version.
Idk who needs to hear this but school starts 4 weeks from tomorrow. We can do this.
Anyone get any good home decor items on they wanna share?
I'll start with this one that my husband picked out. π
Felt cute, might make your house cute too.
One more day until my holiday-ish weekend.
I say "ish" because those of us who hustle know that "time off" usually consists of catching up on paperwork, ordering the things, doing billing and expenses, answering messages from 4 days ago... washing your hair. I might actually remember to take a vitamin or something idk.
I am sneaking away to Traverse City π for an anniversary trip with the hubs for a couple of days, so here's to a weekend of refreshment.
Take care of yourselves.
Let's start July fresh together.
