We’ve heard it all…

03/22/2021

We want to take a moment to thank our customers and community. We are an Asian-owned small business and we’re moved by the outpouring of support from the community. While the past year has been one of the most difficult in the 3 decades we’ve been in operation, we’ve been able to get by and provide for our staff and their families with your patronage. And our hearts have been lifted by your smiles and conversations. We are grateful to be a small business in West Michigan.

Su Alterations is soliciting recommendations from the public for organizations in Kent County in need of washable fabric face masks. Our team has a limited number of handmade fabric masks available for donation to organizations serving vulnerable individuals in our community. These double ply masks are made from 100% combed cotton fabric with high thread count and come with a filter pocket. The masks were hand made by our expert tailors in Grand Rapids. Please message us directly or email us at [email protected]. Masks are available on a first-come basis. Due to limited quantities, we will prioritize giving to those organizations with limited resources serving vulnerable individuals. Feel free to write us if you have questions. - Su Alterations

Su Alterations would like to thank the Kent County Health Department team and their families for their tireless work and sacrifice in keeping our community safe. We have seen the first-rate care, compassion, expertise, and leadership demonstrated by Dr. Adam London and team in helping families affected by Covid-19. You folks are our heroes. We appreciate you more than you could ever know.

Su Alterations would also like to thank the team at Macatawa Bank, including Melanie Salamone, Ryan Hoogstra, and Cindy Varney for providing invaluable service to our business in these challenging times. The team at Macatawa Bank is proactive, communicative, professional, efficient, and fast(!), allowing us to focus our energies on pivoting our business strategy.

Last, Su Alterations would like to thank The Right Place, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and Governor Gretchen Whitmer for your support of local small businesses. Susan Bui immigrated to west Michigan in the early 80s after the Vietnam War; she arrived penniless, with no formal education or training, became an apprentice seamstress to a local tailor and later opened her own small tailor shop while raising a growing family. Nearly 30 years later, she has put 6 children through college, opened tailor shops in Kentwood, Grandville, Portage, and Muskegon, and tailored garments for customers for the most important milestones in their lives - from baptisms to proms to college graduations to weddings. Her business provides livelihood not just for her family, but for her staff and their families as well. There is no other place we would rather live or work than Grand Rapids and Kent County. Thank you so much, West Michigan, for your past, present and future support. With all of our love, - The team at Su Alterations.

We'd like to express our sincere gratitude to Crystal Bui and Su Alterations for reaching out on behalf of the Vietnamese community and donating 100 hand-made cloth masks to the KCHD. These masks will be distributed to some of Kent County's most vulnerable populations. We thank you for your incredibly generous donation!

We are grateful to have talented, detail-oriented tailors on staff. Below are BEFORE and AFTER pics of a challenging project we completed at the Portage/Kalamazoo Su's location. The story went like this: dress was too small for client (only size available); client wanted a lace up back; dress also needed to be shortened (with so many layers of fabric on the hem we could've made her another dress or two); client bought fabric to make a privacy panel and lace; client was not able to bring dress in until a week before prom; two fittings and half a dozen Tylenols later, dress was completed by two of our tailors; client picked up on the eve of prom. And they all lived happily ever after. A big thanks to our wonderful staff, our patient clients ( ) and shout out to , , !

Su says plan ahead if you're attending holiday events. We're seeing a lot of rush order requests. Please give your tailors enough time to make adjustments on your order and please understand that we are doing our best to accommodate everyone.

Prom Pointers: #1. Get in Early. Don't wait until the last minute to have dresses or suits altered. Turn around time is longer during prom season due to the number of orders that tailors have to complete. Most prom dresses are elaborate with sequins, jeweled busts and layers of lining. Regardless of whether your dress or suit will require simple or extensive alterations, you should see your tailor 2-3 weeks before the event to be fitted and allow time for adjustments after second fittings.

Prom season has arrived! Every year the special event is like a rite of passage for young adults, especially for graduating high school seniors. While preparing for prom and shopping for the ideal prom dress should be an exciting experience for young women, it can quickly turn into an expensive, frustrating endeavor if you don't plan ahead. Most prom dresses require alterations and the trend in recent years has been bling, bling and more bling (i.e., jeweled and sequined gowns), thus making dresses more time consuming to tailor. In the coming days, we'll be posting advice about selecting and altering formalwear for prom. Check back for more details!
