❓ What is your favorite part of working with children as an optometrist?
Children have a curiosity about their eyes, and I love working with that. They are learning how their eyes work, while I am making sure they're developing on track!

❓ What are some common misconceptions you encounter about children's vision and eyecare?
The biggest misconception is that parents think they need to wait until their child knows their letters and numbers to get in for an exam. In fact, a child's eye exam is completely different from a typical adult eye exam and the child does not have to speak at all! A child's first eye exam should be between 6 and 12 months old, and then every two years after.

❓ What are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of pediatric optometry?
The most rewarding aspect is that the treatments we initiate now will have a lasting impact on the child's life - how well they see and function directly impacts their successes in life through adulthood! This is also one of the challenging aspects of this, as we need to be meticulous to ensure the right care is prescribed to these children.

❓ What are you most excited about achieving in your practice?
I am so excited to be providing a service to this community that hasn't had access previously! I am looking forward to making pediatric eye care easily accessible in Grand Rapids to our English and Spanish speaking communities!

❓ What is one piece of advice you'd give parents concerned about their child's eye health?
As soon as you have a concern, bring your child to a pediatric eye doctor. A pediatric eye doctor is specifically trained to examine a child's vision and ocular health to ensure the development of the eyes are on track. If your child needs any type of eye care, a pediatric eye doctor knows the current treatments to help course-correct where needed.

❓ What is one fun fact about yourself most people wouldn't know?
In college I helped plan a large concert called Ferris Fest with headliners Karmin and Reel Big Fish at Ferris State University.

❓ If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I would have the superpower of freezing time - this would give me the opportunity to extend those vacation days and fit in all the things I want to accomplish in a week!

❓ Do you have a favorite sweet treat or dessert?
I love S'mores!

❓ What do you love most about living and working in Grand Rapids?
Since moving back to MI from CA, I have really appreciated the hard-working spirit of Grand Rapids. I love the four seasons, and I am in awe of the beauty of MI.

❓ What is your favorite way to spend a day off?
I have to get out of the house! I like to go hiking, skiing, to the farmers' market, out to breakfast, anything!

Your eyes have a built-in defense system called the tear film – it's the first thing light hits to give you clear, comfortable vision. Think of it like a three-layer shield 🛡️👁️

Inner Layer: The mucin layer, made by your cornea, smoothes the surface and fights off germs.
Middle Layer: The aqueous layer, from your lacrimal gland, hydrates and nourishes your cornea, like rain on a thirsty garden.
Outer Layer: The lipid layer, produced by your meibomian glands, acts like a raincoat, preventing tears from evaporating and keeping your eyes comfy.

Sometimes, though, this system can get out of whack. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) can clog those oil glands, leading to Dryness and irritation or even Blurred vision. The may cause the tear film to become uneven, scattering light like a disco ball. 🪩✨
