Doug Lipinski, MPA ‘02, was selected as West Texas A&M University’s Vice President of Athletics. His first day with West Texas A&M University will be on August 28, 2024.

Currently, Lipinski serves as Grand Valley State University’s deputy athletic director where he oversees external relations, marketing and promotions, communications, ticketing, digital marketing, multimedia, corporate sponsorships, annual givings, merchandise, and licensing. Lipinski has spent 22 years at GVSU.

Noricks most recently served as a communications officer with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek, MI, where she led communications strategies in support of the foundation’s mission and deep commitments to racial equity, community engagement and leadership development.

Brianna Romines '03 is joining the Epilepsy Foundation of America as the Vice President of Affiliate Strategy where she'll build a national affiliate network to provide epilepsy services to every zip code in the U.S. Brianna has been serving with the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan for 20 years and been its President since 2016. 👏

minutes south of DeVos Center) for a summer Cecipalloza
gathering, Thursday, June 13, 7:00 p.m. -8:30 p.m. The performer is
the Chris Canas, the “Detroit Prince of Blues.” Bring family
and friends. Strollers are welcome. Look for a blue ballon
to find us on the lawn.

Come early and check out the Kentwood Farmers Market
which takes place next door in parking lot from
4:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m. There will be several food trucks. You are
also welcome to bring your own food, beer, or wine to the
concert.

Fredrick D. Johnson, Jr., Muskegon Chief Public Defender, was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by the School of Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Legal Studies in appreciation of the many years of outstanding dedication, mentorship, and guidance of Grand Valley State University students. Fredrick has been practicing law since 1986. The Muskegon Office of the Public Defender was established in 2013, at which time Fred was appointed as the Chief Public Defender. Interns have been an integral part of the office since 2015. During the past 9 years, he has supervised and mentored approximately 200 interns, many of whom were GVSU students!

On February 23, 2024, the Board of Trustees approved moving the GVSU Police Academy to the Holland Meijer Campus to help meet increased demand for the academy’s law enforcement education and training. The move includes a renovation of the campus building for classrooms, scenario rooms, a multipurpose room, an exterior drive track for training and performance testing and more. Take a peek at how much work has been done so far, in anticipation for Fall 2024!

On May 16th, Groundswell Stewardship Initiative hosted over 400 students, educators, families, and friends for its 14th annual Student Project Showcase here at GVSU. 27 local schools showcased their hard work after conducting research all year long. Attendees enjoyed an outdoor picnic, crafts, raffles, yard games, and most importantly: learning from student scholars. Beautiful weather made the evening a fantastic event for the community to come together to celebrate the our scholars and teachers' stewardship efforts.

Carley Curtis and Kate Snow, both majoring in GVSU Hospitality & Tourism Management, has garnered the People’s Choice Award for their presentation at the Asian American Hotel Owners Assocation's annual conference.

The conference’s Hotel Turnaround Collegiate Championship challenged 11 teams from seven universities to engage in a simulation aimed at analyzing under performing hotels.

Nonprofit with GVSU roots unites volunteers for projects across Michigan Michigan Cares for Tourism, a nonprofit founded by a GVSU faculty member, has been organizing restoration projects at parks and recreation areas across the state since 2012.

Isa Grunwaldt, a senior studying public and nonprofit administration, was among 137 nationally recognized by ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge for its Student Voting Honor Roll.

Students were recognized for their commitment to nonpartisan democratic engagement and their contributions to their local communities.

On May 9, 2024, Julie Bulson, MPA ‘07, was appointed by Governor Whitmer to the State Fire Safety Board.

Bulson is the director of business assurance for Corewell Health, received a Nursing Degree from Blodgett School of Nursing, and a Bachelor of Science, MPA in Healthcare Leadership and Doctor of Nursing Practice in Health Systems Leadership from GVSU.
Julie Bulson is reappointed to represent hospital administrator for a term commencing July 16, 2024, and expiring July 15, 2028.

Michigan State Police (MSP) Sixth District shared the experience of students in one of CECI's Criminal Justice Cold Case Class in which they assisted with the murder of Bonita "Bonnie" Oom. Students assisted with categorizing information, digitizing paper copies, and analyzing the facts in the case. Then finally, students were able to present their findings.

MSP encourages anyone who has information on this case, to contact the Michigan State Police Sixth District HQ at 616-866-6660 or Kent County Silent Observer at 1-866-774-2345.

Congratulations to these two featured CECI graduating student employees who worked with the Grand Valley State Police Department!

Brooke Campbell and Christina Owens will be both graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice. Brooke will be pursuing a master's program at Western Michigan University studying sociology with a focus on criminal justice. Christina Owens will be pursuing her master's degree in criminal justice at GVSU.

Congratulations!

Meet two more of our graduating students employees!

Brooke Campbell's favorite memory with the department is learning how to get into and jump start cars. After graduating, she is attending a master's program at Western Michigan University studying sociology with a focus on criminal justice.

Christina Owen's favorite memory was helping jump start a citizens car with another cadet. She intends on pursuing her Master's Degree in criminal justice at GVSU.

On April 25, 2024, the Grand Valley Student Reporting Labs (GVSRL) hosted the GVSRL Career Day in the Eberhard Center on the Pew Campus. The 100 local students involved in the program were able to meet with industry professionals focused on communications and education.

Tyler Peery is one of the recipients of the Fulbright Summer Institute Award. The Fullbright award consists of eight students from across the nation who will be participating in the program at the Welsh university in Wales. While abroad, students will explore Welsh nationhood through the perspective of the Welsh people.

Peery, who’s majoring in elementary education with a minor in applied linguistics and a focus on teaching English as a Second Language, sees the opportunity as an extension of his current pathway at GVSU as he wants to teach English abroad in the future.
