I started a long term sub job at MCC on a Monday, graduated from Grand Valley that Saturday, then went back to sun for the last five weeks of the 18-19 school year. I was hired to be the Instructional Assistant in the HS library that same fall and I signed my contract to teach Social Studies at MCC in 2021. I even moved up to Scottville during my first year teaching to be closer work and now it has become home.

Help us celebrate by wearing your GVSU Laker gear and join us for Storytime in the Park-Garfield on Tuesday 7/9. Many different GVSU departments will be joining us with a variety of activities! To top off the night, we will have superheroes on hand for pictures and fun!
We still need more volunteers for Laker Night at Storytime in the Park this Tuesday!

After graduation, I stayed local and taught lower elementary for 2 years at Comstock Park Public Schools. Once my husband and I started our own family, we moved back home to Niles, MI to be with our families and I was hired into the district we both graduated from: Brandywine Community Schools. While we continue to miss west Michigan, Iโm thrilled to have returned to my alma mater and found a love for middle school Englishโsomething I never would have thought Iโd consider until I went through the English courses at GVSU.

See you July 9!
Our Alumni continue to do great things ๐
A few weeks ago, we wanted to hear from YOU about who should be nominated as a Superhero within our community. ๐ฆธโโ๏ธ Why? Because we all know that real superheroes go beyond the masks and capes. We want to honor those who make a difference in our community. We had an amazing response, but these two were nominated numerous times for their continued hard work and dedication at Allendale Public Schools and within our community. They have made a huge impact on the younger generation of Allendale and their families. This also comes just in time for teacher appreciation week! ๐Congratulations to Mr. Smolen and Mrs. Miller! ๐
"Mr. Smolen is an exceptional principal who has gone above and beyond his call of duty to inspire, educate, and shape the younger generation of Allendale. His passion for commitment to the students at AECC has earned him the title of "Superhero," and it's not hard to see why. I heard he even dressed up as a hotdog, on hotdog day at lunchtime!" ๐ญ
"Mrs. Miller, an amazing art teacher, has a unique teaching style that makes learning art messy, creative, and so much fun. She is patient, kind, and is always willing to go the extra mile to help her students. Mrs. Miller has a knack for bringing out the best in her students. Her creative teaching methods and dedication to her students has helped many of them become closer to real life Picassos." ๐ฉโ๐จ
What makes Mr. Smolen and Mrs. Miller standout together is their ability to connect with their students on a personal level. They take the time to get to know each of their students, their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. They create a safe and nurturing environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, sharing their thoughts and ideas, and growing as individuals.
It's no surprise that Mr. Smolen and Mrs. Miller have been nominated numerous times for their hard work and dedication. They truly are superheroes in our community, and we are grateful to have them in our schools. Congratulations once again to Mr. Smolen and Miss Miller and thank you for all that you do! ๐๐
It's teacher appreciation week and we are so grateful for those who work in education. We were thrilled to host our third annual GVSU Education Alumni & Mentor Teacher Appreciation Night tonight to say thank you to our Lakers ๐
Teachers deserve our appreciation year-round for all they do to help our students learn, grow, & succeed. But this week especially, we're celebrating & thanking our teachers for their hard work & dedication to education.
Happy !

When I graduated GVSU, I began teaching 2nd grade with South Lyon Community Schools. I then wanted to move closer to home after my first year with SLCS and began teaching and coaching with Fenton Area Public Schools. At Fenton, I taught Kindergarten, Second Grade and K-3 Resource Room and coached MS Cheerleading. During that time I received my Masters Degree from The University of Michigan - Flint in Literacy Instruction. I then started with Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) at Elmer Knopf Learning Center (EKLC) in 2015 as a Self-Contained MOCI Teacher to adult students (age 18-26). EKLC was a familiar school for me as it inspired me to pursue my studies in special education. I was a volunteer student mentor & Special Olympics volunteer all four of my high school education. While EKLC was home, I returned to Fenton Area Public Schools in 2018 as a part-time K-3 Resource Room teacher when I was pregnant with my second daughter to allow more time with family. In 2020, I was ready to begin full-time work and returned to GISD-EKLC as a Self-Contained MOCI teacher to secondary students (high school). In October of 2022, I shifted to a Teacher Consultant role within EKLC and work alongside colleagues to better the IEP process and provide support to staff, students and families. I am an avid supporter of Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) and participate in SOMI Area-13 Polar Plunge Annually. Support my February 2024 Plunge in Lake Fenton for SOMI by donating in my included link. Go Lakers!

After graduation, I attended GVSUโs out-of-state teacher job fair. I got recruited down to Houston, Texas to teach. I accepted my first teaching job teaching 5th grade teaching in the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD school district. I taught multiple grade levels and also went back to school and earned my Masters Degree in Special Education from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. I taught in the Katy ISD and Fort Bend ISD school districts in the Houston area as well. My husbandโs job moved us to Colorado and I accepted my current job teaching 4th grade at Castle Rock, Elementary. I love all the experience that I have had in my educational career.

Since my graduation from GVSU's College of Education in April 2007, my journey in the education field has been a dynamic and fulfilling one. Job hunting back then was competitive, with stacks of roughly 400-600 resumes per teaching position. I vividly recall the advice from Liz Storey during one of our COE sessions, urging us to distinguish ourselves from the masses. In a creative attempt to stand out, I even distributed chocolates along with my resumes, a gesture that, fortunately, helped secure my first-grade teaching position at a small charter school in the fall of 2007. Shortly thereafter, I found myself welcomed into the Hesperia Community Schools community, where my professional journey truly blossomed. Since then, I have also completed my Master's in Elementary Education at Western Michigan University.
Over the past seventeen years, I've taught various grade levels, initially starting in second grade and later transitioning through K-2 and technology. Teaching in Hesperia has been a source of immense joy, surrounded by some of the most dedicated and inspiring educators and staff I could have envisioned. The families I've had the privilege to work with have added another layer of fulfillment to my career.
Last year marked a significant milestone as I hosted my first GVSU student teacher, an experience that further fueled my commitment to mentoring future educators. I'm eagerly anticipating the collaboration with my next GVSU student teacher in January, as I continue to share my passion for teaching and learning.
Beyond the classroom, my enthusiasm for technology has been a constant companion throughout my career. Integrating technology into my teaching has been a personal mission, fostering a dynamic and engaging learning environment whenever possible.
On a personal note, I am happily married to Shane, and together we are raising two wonderful children, Logan (15) and Macy (11). As I reflect on the past seventeen years, I feel grateful for the support of my family and the community in which I teach. Looking ahead, I aspire to continue mentoring teachers and students, fostering a love for learning and embracing the ever-evolving landscape of education and technology.
