Neighbors International, an international college student ministry of Calvary Church, seeks families and individuals to provide much-needed friendship and care to our newly arriving local international college students. As a Friendship Family/partner, you will be assigned a student(s) who lives close to you and shares similar interests. We are looking for families/individuals over 30 willing to meet with their student(s) at least once a month and talk with them at least once a week. Consider helping to ease the loneliness and culture shock many of these students face as they arrive in a new country.

To participate, you must complete an application/background check and attend a training session. The NI leadership team will be at a table by the Connection Point following both services on August 11 and 18, where you can ask questions and complete all the necessary paperwork. To apply or to ask questions, email Sonja at [email protected].

Earlier this week, Calvary's Refugee Ministry hosted a "Back-to-School Backpack Picnic,“ with an Isaiah 64:8 theme. Our focus was on supporting our refugee families from seven different countries, as they prepare for the new school year. Calvary provided backpacks filled with essential school supplies, including notebooks, pencils, and crayons, to ensure that each child had the tools they needed for success. The families enjoyed activities like an art workshop by the Healing In Art team, delicious cold drinks served by Clique Coffee, and games with the ministry’s volunteers. The event highlighted Calvary's commitment to love our neighbors as ourselves following God's command. Pray for all involved that we would continue to direct our eyes to Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

On Sunday, we were delighted to share an update from the Jerusalem Project in our worship services. What a joy to see the work God is doing through church plants we have come alongside in the Detroit area. Thank you for your continued support as we seek to see the Gospel witnessed to the ends of the earth, just as God promised in Acts 1:8.

Our team of high school students is on their way to Hawaii! They will be partnering with Praying Pelican Ministries and local organizations to help with the fire cleanup in Maui and engaging in relational ministry with families displaced by the 2023 fires. Pray for unity, safety, and that they would be a blessing to all they encounter. Follow along with them as they serve at calvarygr.org/stmblog.

Earlier this week our short term team of seven returned from Central Asia (just west of China) where we had the joy of coming alongside our brothers and sisters there who are part of a local church we have partnered with for many years. The fellowship and mutual encouragement were very sweet as we supported them with team building activities for their kid’s camp leaders training, and with devotional and testimony sharing at a women’s retreat. These two events were blessed by the Lord as we saw fruit bring produced in both settings. We praise God for this!

As Rebekah Kennedy shared on behalf of the Operations Team earlier this month, your giving to the General Fund is essential in helping us maintain the beautiful facility God has blessed us with. This week, we also have the opportunity to see how God has used volunteering with our Operations Staff to bless and grow Calvary congregant, Warren DeHaan. Hear from Warren how God led him to come serve alongside the Facilities Team. It's a wonderful testimony of the many different ways God faithfully allows us to be part of his work in this place.

Today is World Refugee Day. Our team is reflecting on a quote from author Nadia Hashimi, "Refugees didn't just escape a place. They had to escape a thousand memories until they'd put enough time and distance between them and their misery to wake to a better day."

As the body of Christ, we are united in our mission to support refugee families, offering them a safe haven and directing their eyes to Jesus, the Prince of Peace. For more information about Calvary's ministry to refugees, contact Lana Duoibes.

In about a month, a team of 28 students and five leaders will be traveling to Hawaii to partner with Praying Pelican Ministries. They will help with the fire cleanup in Kula and engage in relational ministry with families displaced by the 2023 fires. Please join in praying for our team members and consider supporting them financially as they prepare for this trip. // Pictures are from a recent team meeting where they put into practice - serving one another like Jesus did.

As part of Calvary's mission to be Christ's Church in this place, Mercy and Missions has the privilege of demonstrating and proclaiming the Gospel as well as equipping you to do the same. We would love to answer your questions about how you can get involved in obeying the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) and serving those reflected in Matthew 25:31-46. Comment below and we'll reach out!

In Sunday's worship services, we had the opportunity to bless Josh Karhan as he is sent out in his new role as Assistant Pastor at New Heart Church in East Grand Rapids. Josh has served on Calvary’s staff for ten years starting in Children’s Ministry and then most recently as the minister and director for High School Ministries. During this time, the Jerusalem Project helped train and equip Josh and his wife Alyssa on their leadership journey. They both participated in LDF. Josh received preaching coaching through the Jerusalem Project, as well as the opportunity to go through the ordination process. Please join us in prayer as we send Josh, Alyssa, and their girls off to this new calling.

We are excited to offer a tangible way to put into practice how to serve those who are in need both within and outside our church. By using a skill or talent that the Lord has given you, you can make a meaningful impact. At calvarygr.org/skillsform is a list of skills or trades you might have, along with your availability to offer them. God has blessed our church with so many unique skills that we know we cannot list them all. If you have something to offer that we haven’t written down, feel free to fill in the blank space. Thank you for your willingness to serve and be served!

Hey Calvary! We got to ask Celeste McDonough, the minister and team leader for the Mercy and Missions Department at Calvary Church, some questions to learn more about her. Celeste has been on staff for 12 years and previously spent 12 years on the mission field. Celeste is a wise leader who loves Jesus; we are blessed to have her on staff. We asked how we could pray for her this season; she requested wisdom in her role at Calvary, at home with her young adult children and aging parents.

It’s time for a Spring Clean! We are having a garage sale at Calvary Church this Saturday, to help our high school students raise money for a mission trip to Hawaii this summer. The team of 28 students and five leaders will partner with Praying Pelican Ministries and local organizations to help with the fire cleanup in Maui and to engage in relational ministry with families displaced by the 2023 fires.

We invite you to support the team by bringing donations of gently used items in good condition during the drop-off times, and of course shopping at the actual event!

A team of eight adults from Calvary will be traveling to Pangrati from June 13-23, to serve alongside Bethany and Emmanuel Tsoutsas, a Jerusalem Project church partner.

While there, the team will host a community festival in the park for families in the area. This will be an outreach, as well as advertising for the VBS that will take place the following week. The team will assist in games, face painting, balloon animals, etc.

The following week the team will join the church in hosting a VBS for children in the community. The team will assist in songs, games, crafts, etc. Along with the VBS, the team will participate in an outreach to the homeless with Emmanuel one evening as well as a potential serving opportunity with other area churches.

Would you consider partnering with the team in prayers and support? Visit calvarygr.org/stmblog for more info.
