The Upside of a Greener Mediterranean Diet
In a recently published study, investigators behind the DIRECT-PLUS clinical trial randomly assigned 294 participants with abdominal obesity/dyslipidemia into three diet groups (all accompanied by physical activity): standard healthy dietary guidelines (HDG), standard Mediterranean, and the so-called green Mediterranean diet.

Both Mediterranean diet groups were calorie restricted and called for 28 g/day of walnuts (+440 mg/day polyphenols provided). However, the green Mediterranean diet was further supplemented with 3-4 cups/day of green tea and 100 g/day of Mankai (a Wolffia globosa aquatic plant strain) in the form of frozen cubes turned into a green shake that replaced dinner (+1240 mg/day total polyphenols provided). The percent change in intrahepatic fat content was quantified continuously by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. NAFLD was defined as an intrahepatic fat content of > 5%.

Why indoor spaces are still prime COVID hotspots 04/14/2021

I found this interesting to help understand MASKS and Ventilation.

Indoor dining Outside buildings a carbon dioxide monitor reads just above 400 parts per million (p.p.m.) but indoors, “even in a seemingly spacious, high-ceilinged restaurant, the number sometimes shoots up as high as 2,000 p.p.m. This signals poor ventilation and is indicative of higher risk for infection,” Lidia Morawska, aerosol scientist, at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia (Nature). https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-00810-9

The WHO outlined specific measures for businesses, detention facilities, schools, and work facilities to improve ventilation; these items should be designated as the minimum standard, not ‘optional’ as is portrayed by frugal owners and shareholders. The updates may appear less necessary as vaccination increases, but immunization should not replace hygienic measures of protection such as air filtration. This grows more pertinent as we consider the future with contagious variants in the discussion of vaccine resistance. The logic is sound; even if SARS-CoV-2 disappeared, reducing influenza and other viral illness’ via improving air quality is a wise investment.

Why indoor spaces are still prime COVID hotspots Risks shoot up when virus particles accumulate in buildings, but it’s not clear how best to improve ventilation.

Clinical Updates from American Holistic Nurse Association

Transmission ( Obesity is the second greatest Risk Factor for Covid-19)
Obesity & exhaled aerosol: Fifteen states in the U.S.A. designate obesity as a qualifying condition for priority vaccination (Montana & Missouri BMI over 40, and MA, NH, ND, SD, reportedly require a second condition such as diabetes). The CDC acknowledges that body mass index (BMI) above 30 is one of four significant risk factors of complications; the World Obesity Federation reports it the second-greatest predictor of COVID-19-related hospitalization and death (globally). Over forty percent of USA citizens are considered obese and though protecting those at higher risk was adopted in vaccine distribution (elders first) adopting condition specific prioritization is worth considering. Implications of new evidence from an observational cohort study described in Oxford Research should be included in evidence-based decision making toward condition priority approach.
