Unexpected Aurora Event While Watching & Capturing the Perseid Meteor Shower
On the evening of August 11 I headed out to the lake to spend the night watching the Perseid meteor shower. I knew there was a chance for Aurora and had my hopes set that I could see and capture the northern lights as well. To my surprise, the universe (and the sun) gifted us with an amazing celestial event! It lasted almost all night and I stayed up until 3am in awe of the scene around me. At one point, the sky was strobing from horizon to straight above me. In the end, I saw and captured very few meteors. They may have been washed out by the Aurora or there might have just not been many to begin with. Either way, I find myself extremely fortunate that I was able to experience all of it. Trying Out My New 360 Camera on the Kayak I recently purchased an Insta360 X4. I wanted to try it out on the kayak to get a few ideas of what it was capable of and how I could use it to be more creative in the content I make. It definitely gives a different perspective while mounted where I usually mount my GoPro. I also purchased Insta360’s Extended Edition Selfie Stick that extends to almost 10 feet. 10 feet is entirely too long to use on the kayak, but hanging it out of the side gives a great perspective and I’ll never be in a spot where the stick doesn’t extend enough for what I need.

Heavy Summer Rain Showers in Michigan

I absolutely love sandhill cranes. I can always count on seeing them while I’m out paddling. They allow me to drift towards them and I’ll sit and watch them until they move on.

A timelapse of the solar eclipse. From about 20 minutes before totality to 30 minutes after. This shows how much darker it gets. The shift into second contact and out to third contact is such a huge difference in light.
