A look back on my favorite photos from the shoreline riding season last year!
An autumn view along the rugged shoreline of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
I took these photos last year for Michigan State Parks and it was one of my favorite Michigan experiences. If you have a horse, don’t miss the opportunity to take them to the shore of Lake Michigan in November!
My 2025 Michigan calendar is ready to preorder. Head over to wtkphotography.com to order yours!
A few details. The link to order is on my site in the main navigation bar. That will open a store page to place the order. Since this is a preorder, you won't receive the calendar right away. I am planning on shipping them all out the first week of November. When ordering, choose the delivery option that works best for you: shipping ($5), pick up from me in Grand Rapids, or pick up from my parents in San Antonio.

Exploring the cliffs around Turnip Rock in my kayak.
Upper Peninsula back roads.
I’ve been to Marquette many times but this was actually the first time that I’ve walked down to the ore dock. Golden hour and blue skies made the first visit a memorable one.
I'll soon be selling calendars featuring my photos from around Michigan!
Stay tuned for ordering details!
Dawn at Turnip Rock
I planned a whole trip around getting this image and I’m so grateful that it worked out to be a beautiful morning on Lake Huron.
I woke up at 4am, got to the lakeshore to start paddling at 5:15am, and spent about 8 hours on the water today. I did almost 9 miles of paddling. Including going out to the Port Austin Lighthouse that sits about 1.5 miles offshore in Lake Huron.
Good morning from Turnip Rock!
All settled in at camp and getting an early bedtime in to prepare for sunrise kayaking on Lake Huron tomorrow. Spending the day on the water and planning to get in about 8-9 miles.
Soon we’ll be seeing these covering trees in bright red, orange, and yellow and, before you know it, they’ll melt away.
I love going out in the evening to fish. It's cooled off, the water is usually like glass, and there's no boats zipping around the lake making wake. Even if the fish aren't biting, drifting out on the lake is one of my moments of zen.
Join me on the kayak as I catch a few fish and stay out until dark and try using an underwater light to lure in some fish.
Evening & Night Fishing Out on the Kayak! Taking advantage of the great late July weather and heading out on the kayak for sunset and night fishing.
Another trip to the Upper Peninsula another new waterfall to explore!

I stood in my front yard last night and captured an easy photo of the Supermoon. Even though the moon’s orbit is in it’s perigee, it’s only about 15% larger and doesn’t look that different from other full moons. The brightness factor is a bit higher at around 30% which is pretty obvious to see when you look down and see how much the moon is illuminating the ground and the intensity of shadows.
On the right side, you can see that there’s just a bit that isn’t illuminated making this moon a bit less than a 100% full moon. I think this is an ideal phase to capture as the terminator line where the sun stops shining illuminates some of the higher elevations on the moon’s surface and the details of craters are more defined.
Height of the Storm
For the timelapse I made of Monday morning's Aurora event, I captured 1,089 photos from 12:25 am to 5:51 am. A lot of the timelapse had lower activity but for almost a whole hour, around 2 to 3 am, the storm was very active. This timespan made it very hard to choose a favorite as each frame was similar but also very different. As this photo shows, there are a lot of colors. Each frame had the colors shifting to different areas and some colors would be a lot more prominent than others. This capture has a nice balance of those colors and was captured at 2:21 am.
This was also the time of the storm where the sky was pulsing from horizon to directly overhead. It was visible with the naked eye and looked like a line of light starting at the horizon and ending directly over head. Sort of the same strength as lighting from a storm far off in the distance. I remember I had to step away from the open sky for a bit and went beneath the trees. When I came back to the open, I noticed the pulsing and froze. I stood there in silence and awe as I know most Aurora at this latitude are not what they look like in photos and usually a faint glow with a bit of definition possible. This pulsing was very prominent, though, and I knew how special it was to be able to witness it.
I love a good swim in Lake Superior.
A lovely summer evening in Marquette at golden hour.
On the evening of August 11 I headed out to the lake to spend the night watching the Perseid meteor shower. I knew there was a chance for Aurora and had my hopes set that I could see and capture the northern lights as well. To my surprise, the universe (and the sun) gifted us with an amazing celestial event! It lasted almost all night and I stayed up until 3am in awe of the scene around me. At one point, the sky was strobing from horizon to straight above me.
In the end, I saw and captured very few meteors. They may have been washed out by the Aurora or there might have just not been many to begin with. Either way, I find myself extremely fortunate that I was able to experience all of it.
Join me around the campfire as tell of my experience and stick around towards the end to see what I captured including a few timelapses.
Thanks for watching and I hope you got to see this amazing show as well! If not, I hope these images can inspire you to chase the Aurora on your own!

A capture from the early hours of the recent Aurora event.
So many photos to go through from last night. For now, here’s a quick shot from my phone.
What a fortunate evening of planning to stay out late to watch and capture the Persied meteor shower and the sky gives us an amazing aurora performance!
Thanks for sharing and hopefully you get the opportunity to see tonight’s show!
