CALL TO ACTION: Protect the Tipped Minimum Wage—Take Action Now!

As you may know, the Michigan Supreme Court recently ruled in a way that will gradually abolish the tipped minimum wage. This decision could have serious implications for our industry, impacting both businesses and workers who rely on the current wage structure. The ruling will also establish mandatory paid leave.

We need your voice now more than ever! We urge you to reach out to your legislators and express the importance of preserving the tipped minimum wage. This wage structure has long provided a sustainable livelihood for thousands in our state, allowing businesses to thrive while offering workers the opportunity to earn a fair income through tips.

Here are some key findings and excellent talking points:

• Bartenders/servers make approximately $26/hr. on average
• More than 65% of bars/restaurants will lay off staff

○ 22% of bars/restaurants will lay off 10% of staff

○ 18% of bars/restaurants will lay off 20% of staff

○ 15% of bars/restaurants will lay off 30% of staff

○ 9% of bars/restaurants will lay off 50+% of staff
• 38% of bars/restaurants will consider reducing their hours of operation
• 52% are considering adding a service charge to offset costs

• 89% plan on raising their menu prices

As for the paid leave structure, this is how it will work:

• No exemptions. All full-time, part-time, seasonal and temp workers will accrue paid leave

• No notification required. Employees will have 72 hours of no-notice leave time every year

• Employees will accrue one hour of paid time off for every 30 hours worked, up to 72 hours a year

• Employers with less than 10 employees can cap accrual at 40 hours and must offer 32 hours of unpaid leave

Contact Your Legislators: Call, email, or write to your local representatives. Share your personal experiences and explain how the tipped minimum wage benefits you and your community.
