Did you know that dancing can be a form of therapy? It’s true! It’s an entire field that’s been growing since the1940s. The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) defines Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) as the psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual. In other words, moving your body helps motivate your mind.

Empathy Definition: the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

How to Teach Empathy: It must be modeled. Empathy is an inherent feeling in most children. Neurodiverse children can often struggle to build empathetic skills. The easiest, most effective way to teach your child about empathy is to model examples of it. Acknowledge their feelings. Validate their concerns. Help them feel what others are feeling by sharing examples or ideas of what someone might be feeling.

A great way to show empathy is by sharing ideas or examples of what another person is feeling. One way to show your child empathy is validating their feelings of being upset with a situation. Empathy can also be shown with other caregivers by sharing similar experiences of getting your child's accommodations, services, or help.

CTC's Therapy & Fun and Therapy & Life Skills will start TODAY! Therapy & Fun is a seven-week summer program set up similar to a day camp. Children ages 3-14 with a range of disabilities attend three days a week and participate in activities facilitated by our therapists (speech, occupational, and dance-movement) and peer-to-peer volunteers. Activities include games, crafts, music, and more. Over the summer, clients are able to build their speech, motor, and social skills so they can be prepared for the school year ahead.

Due to the severe storm and power outage at Mayflower church, our Therapy & Fun and Therapy & Life Skills programs are CANCELLED today. If power is restored, we will continue tomorrow as planned. Emotional regulation is an important part of everyday life. Being able to help others control their emotions by doing these actions can go a long way. Our Behavioral Health Therapy works with families, couples, and individuals to better navigate mental, social, and emotional issues related to neurodiversity. It seeks to help clients use their own strengths to overcome difficulties with anxiety, depression, relationships, and trauma. The ultimate goal of Behavioral Health Therapy is to celebrate the client’s strengths and leverage them to find solutions that create change.

How well do you know CTC? Can you answer this question correctly of what kind of therapies CTC provides?
Our speech therapists can provide evaluations of speech, language, voice, alternative communication (like picture symbols or computer systems), and some oral motor or feeding concerns. We can diagnose a child with speech, language, voice, stuttering, or other communication related disorders OR we can help figure out what skills your child or loved one needs to work on if they already have a diagnosis like Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, ADHD, and more. We can provide weekly or monthly individual or group speech therapy to work on your child’s goals either at our clinic or by telehealth, using a computer or tablet from the comfort of your own home. We can help guide you to doctors, community organizations, and support groups if you need more help than we can provide.

June is the month to bring awareness about Men's health. Men and boys rarely speak up about their mental health, to combat this by: open up with a trusted adult, speak up and share your experiences, educate yourself and your child about mental health, and lastly show compassion to yourself and others.

06/14/2024

June is Pride Month! As we celebrate our LGBTQ members, remember to uplift their voices and make them feel safe. We can make a better space for our friends by educating ourselves, donating our time or money to local charities, and evaluating our values.
Here are some resources to help educate yourself on the topic:
