• Trouble seeing at school is one of the most common early indicators of kids’ vision problems. If your child starts to complain of not being able to see the board, odds are that they have developed myopia, or nearsightedness.

• Another common refractive disorder is hyperopia, or farsightedness. Uncorrected farsightedness has been proven to impact reading skills and overall school performance.

• The final refractive disorder is astigmatism, a condition in which the transparent cornea of the eye is not rounded like a basketball, but rather is bent irregularly, like a football. Astigmatism can cause blurred vision and headaches. It can be treated with corrective lenses and can coexist with near- and/or farsightedness.

👁️ Focusing and Aligning = Common Eye Movement Issues 👁️

• Early and regular eye care can detect and treat two serious eye movement conditions: amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed/misaligned eyes). The earlier these problems are identified and treated, the greater the possibility of correction.

• Only regular comprehensive kids eye exams determine if your child is one of the 25% of children suffering from one of these common vision problems.

Did you know that children's dental services are covered by Medicaid?

Children under 21 years of age enrolled in Medicaid receive a comprehensive set of benefits known as the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit. This was introduced in 1967 to give the “right care to the right child at the right time in the right setting.” At minimum, children must receive dental services that:

- Maintain dental health
- Restore teeth
- Relieve pain and infections

In addition, if a dental condition is uncovered through a regular dental examination and it requires treatment, the state must also provide the necessary treatment even if it isn’t normally part of what that state covers.

Here are examples of common dental services that might be provided include:

- Regular dental cleanings and exams
- Fluoride treatments
- Dental sealants
- Fillings
- Crowns
- Extractions
- Other dental services that are medically necessary (this includes emergency treatment as well)

If your child is covered by Medicaid, you will not need to pay co-payments or premiums for your child’s dental care.

How Important is Fluoride for My Child's Teeth?

For children of all ages, fluoride is important to strengthen tooth enamel, which helps prevent against tooth decay. In fact, fluoride and regular dental cleanings can even help reverse early signs of tooth decay. And, strong tooth enamel during childhood helps prevent tooth decay for the rest of your little one’s life.

The easiest place to get fluoride is from tap water. Since the vast majority of community water systems have fluoride, simply drinking water from the tap can help your kiddos fight tooth decay.

Other good sources of fluoride include:
• Most toothpastes: look for fluoride on the label
• Fluoride treatments: your child’s dentist will recommend
• Fluoride mouthwash (not recommended for children under age six): choose mouthwash for kids
