We are saddened to share that the NEW Zoo recently lost our female red wolf, Mayo. Mayo was born on May 5, 2009 (Cinco de "Mayo") at the Western North Carolina Nature Center. She came to the NEW Zoo in 2013 and she raised 6 pups here in 2014.
Mayo passed away overnight on July 31st and was discovered the next morning by her zookeepers. All indications pointed to a peaceful passing in her sleep. A necropsy (animal autopsy) was performed, and while the exact cause of death was undetermined, there were several age-related complications that likely led to her death.
Mayo was sedated for a routine annual exam in May of this year, and at that time she was looking great for her age! Even as recent as last week, Mayo was observed initiating play behaviors through the fence with the male Canada lynx who lives in the habitat next door, something the two animals have always seemed to enjoy doing. Mayo celebrated her 15th birthday earlier this year, making her the 2nd oldest living red wolf in the world at the time. The zoo's male red wolf, Jason, passed earlier this year, and since then, the zoo has been working with the American Red Wolf SAFE program to find a male wolf to join our family. We will continue to move forward with any recommendations from SAFE and hope to introduce the community to a new "wolf pack" in the coming months.
There's always next time...
DYK: Although they look like tiny deer, blue duikers are a species of small antelope - which means they are more closely related to cows than they are to deer! Blue duikers are the smallest members of the duiker family - standing only about 13 to 16 inches tall and weighing around 8 to 12 pounds.
Let's feed Petunia and Clover!
We are recruiting volunteers for our next BIG event: Cat-Con for Conservation! It's an event that brings together our love for cats, conservation, superheroes and cosplay - and we need your help to pull it off on Friday August 16! Send us a DM or email [email protected] for details.
Tyr and Balder are the bestest buds! 🐸💚 Like other tree frogs, Amazon milky tree frogs have special toe-pads that help them climb. Their toes are so sticky, they can support 14 times their own body weight! 💪
We are SO excited for tonight's Feast with the Beasts event! Please note that the Zoo will close today at 3pm so that we can prepare for the event. A limited number of general admission tickets will be available at the door starting at 6pm. Can't wait to see everyone here!
Up and at 'em! We know the ferrets sleep an awful lot (they are nocturnal after all!), but when they are awake, they are definitely fun to watch.
Nigel LOOOOVES fresh leaves! The Giraffe Feeding Experience is open daily this time of year from 10:30am-1pm and again from 2pm-4:30pm. Stop out for a visit this weekend - Nigel would love to see you!
Burrowing owls are quite unique! Unlike most owl species, these relatively small (and adorable!) birds are most active during the day. They also build their nests in underground burrows.... hence their name! 🦉
Tickets are selling fast for the upcoming Feast with the Beasts event, hosted by the NEW Zoological Society and presented by Capital Credit Union!

Tootie is a cutie! Aldabra tortoises are some of the largest tortoises in the world. Tootie here weighs over 150 pounds, but she's quite a bit smaller than our male tortoise, Al. He tops the scales at well over 400 pounds! 😮 Of course, we love every bit of them both! 🐢

Today's post for National Zookeeper Week highlights our work with Lucky the alligator! Lucky has learned that the sound of metal tapping or rubbing on the rocks of his pond means that "breakfast is served!" He's quite polite about taking his meals, as he demonstrates here with the help of zookeeper Brent. This positive reinforcement training with Lucky has made his mealtimes easy and stress-free, both for the Lucky and for his caretakers. That's something to celebrate! 🐊
National Zookeeper Week continues: Here's another shot of our dedicated zookeepers hard at work! Brent and Shannon work with Nigel to help him create a painting masterpiece - he's true Picasso! Nigel touches the green dot to move the paint brush, earning a tasty treat in the process. This positive reinforcement training is an important part of what we do every day with the animals. Great job Shannon and Brent (and Nigel!)!
It's National Zookeeper Week! Today we're celebrating our AWESOME zookeepers by introducing you to Hoyo the snow monkey: she has such amazing care here at the NEW Zoo that she is officially the oldest snow monkey in the AZA population! She's 32 years old!
That's quite a milestone and something we're very proud of, so join us in thanking our exceptional keeper team!
We are excited to announce the return of Accessible Zip Lining at the Adventure Park! Join us this Thursday July 25th from 12pm to 5pm. Registration is required to secure your zip time. Learn more and register today: https://buff.ly/46ezCcj
