5 Ways to Combat Rising Postal Rates
I'll stop and say its just short of tyrannical.
In spite of pressure from Congress (who can only make recommendations) and intense industry lobbying, USPS once again this week will be raising prices on several different mail classes. Amazingly, this is the 4th increase in price since 2022. If we felt that it would improve speed or service, we'd be all for it, but we have yet to see much if any improvement at USPS since the appointment of the current postmaster.
So what can you as a marketer do?
We know that direct mail is important part of growing your business. In 2023, according to the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), the average success rate on direct mail projects was 4.4% - much higher than email marketing (a .12% average open rate). Response rates for project mailed using internally developed or house lists, climbs up to 9%.
So how can you maintain or expand your reach without increasing your postage cost for your next mailer? Here are five options that we at Kuehn Printing would be happy to discuss with you:
1. Optimize Size: Can the size of your project be optimized as a letter or flat, to reduce cost?
2. Change class: If you're mailing First Class or Presort First Class - would other options like Marketing Mail (formerly Presort Std.) still work for your project?
3. Take advantage of USPS Discounts: USPS overs Direct Mail Promotions and Incentives on a quarterly basis - offering up to 5% off of your postage.
4. Register your organization for Non Profit Status with USPS (for qualifying organizations): If you think you might be eligible, we can help you fill out and register with USPS (note - not all non profits are eligible, and this is different than registering with the IRS).
5. See if EDDM is right for your business: Every door direct mail is a great way to send out non-addressed mail to a a geographic location at a discounted postage rate - great for restaurants, neighborhood retail, and other widely used service businesses.
If you'd like to talk about any of these ideas and how they might benefit your next project, you can reach out to me, [email protected] with any questions or inquires. Happy Printing!

Campaign signs influence how we vote more than you might realize Especially in local races, political signs can drive name recognition in important ways. In one study, they even helped elevate a fictitious candidate to near the front of the pack.

Each week we deliver approximately 8,000 lbs of paper trim waste and cardboard just across the river to Georgia-Pacific where they recycle that paper into bath tissue, napkins and towels. Their Broadway mill is one of the largest wastepaper recycling operations in the world. Being a good neighbor and environmentally safe and friendly is important to us, and we appreciate the partnership with GP.
Pocket folders are a great way to leave a lasting impression. Whether you want to to organize your proposals, brochures, business cards, or other promotional items, they are relatively inexpensive and a great way to get your brand in front of potential customers.
Another 5-Star Review - Let us show you how we can help you with your next printing project!
Don't be like Britney - make sure to plan far in advance for your paper needs. The global paper shortage has not subsided, and Kuehn Printing we are advising our clients to be looking ahead 6 to 12 months in planning your large print projects. Print demand continues to be high and paper mills do not have capacity to produce more. We can help you navigate this difficult time so you can still receive a high quality product, on time, and on budget.

The art of printing is putting ink on paper to make a final product that is worthy of our client's standards.
Earlier this year, we highlighted how some of the paper that we use is made at Verso in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Now, we want to share how ink the ink that goes on that paper is made.
Every step in the process, from making paper and ink to putting that ink on paper, is done with care and passion to help make a product that our clients can be proud of!

Our Story Continues - Winning Together
Our company was started in 1982 by the Kuehn Family. With some used equipment, hard work, and perhaps the nativity of being in their early 20’s they started a 600 sq foot “shop” printing business cards, letterhead, forms - small, general office use type items for businesses in the Downtown Green Bay area.
Today, Kevin (that’s him in the photo above) and myself (Ryan Kuehn) have grown our business to over 16,000 sq feet , 16 employees, 5 Heidelberg presses the ability to print full color up to 28” x 40”. We are serving clients across the country: producing catalogs, direct mail postcards, pocket folders, labels, and yes, we still produce business cards, letterheads and forms. We are proud to have some clients that have been doing business with us our entire existence: 36 years and counting!
Forgive me for having a lot of pride in our business, Kuehn Printing. I am proud not only of the quality of products that we produce and the number of business we help grow, but our commitment to serving the community.
A lot has changed for small businesses since 1982, but the way we operate our business hasn’t. We produce high quality products, at a competitive price, on time. Its that simple model that has allowed us to grow far beyond that little shop. Printing is a deadline driven business, and we try to make things as easy as possible for our clients, while providing excellent customer service. We care -- and it shows!
